For years, people have been asking for darker themes for Windows, but even when they finally added a dark theme in Windows 10, it still didn’t work for File Explorer. In an upcoming update, that’s about to change.

Over at the Windows Experience blog, Microsoft said:

Since releasing this feature [the dark theme], our top feedback request from you has been to update File Explorer to support dark theme, and with today’s build it’s happening! Along the way, we also added dark theme support to the File Explorer context menu, as well as the Common File Dialog (aka the Open and Save dialogs).

So if you upgrade to the latest insider build, you’re going to finally get a dark theme for File Explorer, as well as the Open and Save dialogs. But should you upgrade to the Insider builds? Probably not, if you use your PC for anything useful other than testing. But if you do like to live on the edge, the option is going to be available to you.

If you want to enable a dark theme on Windows 10 today, you can do that easily by just going to Settings > Personalization > Colors and changing the “choose your app mode” option to dark. That’ll change most of Windows to use a dark theme, but it won’t update your applications. You’ll have to read our full Dark Theme guide for all the rest of the instructions for Chrome, Firefox, Office, etc.
