Sitting at the edge of a marsh in southeast London, the steam-driven Crossness Pumping Station would appear totally removed from the concerns of modern web development. But take a moment to appreciate the station’s interior: the ornate Romanesque ironwork, the magnificent profusion of arches and columns, the careful application of color. Then consider two points: the sole purpose of this Victorian construct was to pump London’s raw sewage into the Thames, and no-one except the station engineers would ever see this beautiful interior design.

The web development industry aspires to deliver beautiful front-end experiences to the public but continually short-changes itself. Most Content Management Systems are dark, satanic mills of poorly laid-out forms that barely communicate to designers and writers, creating torturous and frustrating work environments.

The design of a few content management systems currently in beta, such as Koken and Blocks are hinting at cleaning up workflow processes, but there is a long way to go.
