There are a lot of bad websites in the world. Despite having a cluster of well-regarded design and development companies, and my growing number of excellent graduate students, Calgary continues to contribute its share. In recognition of this fact, and in attempt to buck the trend, every year I hold the "Calgary’s Worst Website" competition.
The rules are simple: in eMail or the comments below, nominate a Calgary-based site that you feel is the worst. Any and all websites are open for nomination, so long as they are related to Calgary: your second cousin’s all-black page for his local grindcore band, the mangled web presence of a Calgary company or institution, etc.
I’d like to think that this competition actually serves some good in the world: last year’s winner, All-Canadian Printing & Digital Services, went from eye-bleedingly bad to greatly improved thanks to the work of Web Candy, a firm just down the street from where I teach at SAIT Polytechnic. I can’t prove that last year’s award was the motivation behind the change, but I like to think it had some influence.
