Windows Via C/C++
Microsoft Windows is a complex operating system. It offers so many features and does so much that it's impossible for any one person to fully understand the entire system. This complexity also makes it difficult for someone to decide where to start concentrating the learning effort. Well, I always like to start at the lowest level by gaining a solid understanding of the system's basic building blocks. Once you understand the basics, it's easy to incrementally add any higher-level aspects of the system to your knowledge. So this book focuses on Windows' basic building blocks and the fundamental concepts that you must know when architecting and implementing software targeting the Windows operating system. In short, this book teaches the reader about various Windows features and how to access them via the C and C++ programming languages

The Windows DDK supports driver development for the following Windows operating systems:
Microsoft® Windows® XP (32-bit and 64-bit environments)
Microsoft Windows 2000
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me)
When you install the DDK, you can select which sections of the DDK to install, based on the systems for which you will be developing drivers. For example, the Windows Me section is one such installation option.
If you decide after installing the DDK that your driver should run on an additional operating system, use the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Control Panel to add the section for that system.
Once you install the DDK support for your target operating system, you can develop your driver on any of these systems. In other words, you can code and build a Windows Me driver on a Windows 2000 operating system, or a Windows 2000 driver on a Windows XP operating system. However, you must test the driver on the target operating system itself.
