GENERAL ERROR: The user is unable to connect to the Oracle database

Problem

GENERAL ERROR: The user is unable to connect to the Oracle database using the NetBackup Java GUI. The user can see the Oracle databases, and when selected, gets a prompt for user account and password, however, the user receives an error stating NetBackup cannot connect to the database

Solution

Overview:
User unable to connect to Oracle databases through the NetBackup (tm) Java GUI.

Troubleshooting:
Review the oratab file on the Oracle server and search for lines containing an asterisk (*).

Resolution:

In the "oratab" file, there was not an entry for the database's System Identifier (SID). Additionally, there were several lines in the oratab file which have an asterisk (*) instead of the SID name. After changing one of these lines to correctly reflect the SID to use, the user was able to connect to the SID through the NetBackup GUI.
