Oracle Virtualbox (ubuntu)

1. networking adapter:

   a. NAT - if you just want to access internet - no public/independent IP.

   b. Bridge Adapter - with independent IP, like 192.168.1.11, with its own network stack connecting to network card and exchange data directly.

2. config static IP address

   #edit your configuration file /etc/network/interfaces, and append the following

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

#static IP to 11
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.11
gateway 192.168.1.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255

    restart network to apply:

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
