How to set up usblan and telnet for A780 in 3 easy steps

  1. Switch your device to usblan mode.Enter the "Setup" application on your device. Configure "USB Mode" to "Modem".Connect your device to your PC with the USB cable. You'll need to do everything after this point every time you re-attach your device via USB.
  2. With Windows 2000/XP:
Start HyperTerminal.     Start->Programs->Accessories->Communications.    Enter some name, it doesn't matter what.Enter an impossible phone number, like "1".    Choose a "Motorola USB Modem" from the list.Click OK.Select "Modify".     Select "Configure" in the Properties dialog.    Check "Operator assisted (manual) dial" in the Connection Preferences dialog.    Click OK in the Connection Preferences dialog.    Click OK in the Properties dialog    Click Dial    Click Cancel in the Operator Assisted or Manual Dial popup
  3. If you type in "AT" and press enter, it should reply with "OK".
  4. Type in "AT+MODE=99" and press enter. You should get no response. At the bottom, the connection state should become "disconnected".
On Linux, minicom is probably your best bet. The serial port is usually /dev/ttyACM0 or /dev/ttyUSB0.

Enter the command "AT+MODE=99".The device should re-enumerate its USB endpoints. The serial port should go away, and in its place you should get a usblan device. If you're using Windows and haven't installed the usblan drivers before, it will prompt to install drivers for new hardware.

If no re-enumeration occurs, and you see "ERROR" on the terminal prog, you might have the newer European A780 firmware that disables usblan mode via the AT command. You'll need to get a transflash card, follow the directions to install linloader, and then to get the linloader script that forces usblan mode. A more convenient option may emerge in the future.

If no re-enumeration occurs and you don't get an "ERROR" response, your terminal program is most likely misconfigured.

Install the usblan drivers
If you're trying to get this to work with Windows 2000/XP:look around in the usual places for a "usblan.rar" or perhaps "btblan-demo-12b9-f001-07-05-2004.exe".

If you're trying to get this to work with Linux:
With Fedora Core 4, it should work out of the box. Just modprobe usbnet.
With some of the various Gentoo kernels, you'll need to manually configure the usblan driver with the device IDs of your Motorola phone -- 0x22b8/0x600c.

Telnet to the phone:

If you're using Windows 2000/XP, the Belcara driver will automatically pick its own IP address, and even includes a built-in DHCP server that assigns the address 169.254.142.2 to your phone. Telnet to that address on Windows.

If you're using Linux, the driver does not pick its own address and does not include a DHCP server. The phone will issue a DHCP query, and will quickly give up and choose 192.168.1.2 as its own address. Run the following command:

ifconfig usb0 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

Finally, telnet to the address 192.168.1.2 and you should be in. This address might conflict with NAT routers. If it does, you might be in trouble, but you use Linux and should have the aptitude to get yourself out of trouble.
