(WHO: Syphilis Spreads in China)

A senior Chinese public health official says China is experiencing a spread of syphilis, a sexually transmitted viral disease. The World Health Organization quotes Xiang-Sheng Chen of China's Center for the Control of Sexually Transmitted Diseases as saying the disease that China virtually eradicated in the 1960s has experienced a tenfold increase over the past decade. The official adds that across the nation now, the number of syphilis cases is increasing by 30 percent.

Chen says the spread of the disease is especially prevalent in the coastal southeastern areas, where the economy is booming, but the economic inequality is also greater. He blames prostitution, worker migration from the countryside to cities, and poor health care systems for the increasing spread of syphilis in China.

(Merkel Marks Berlin Wall Anniversary with Address to U.S. Congress)

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called on the United States to work with Germany to "overcome the walls of the 21st century," as she marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Chancellor Merkel made the remarks in Washington Tuesday as she addressed a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress. Ms. Merkel - who began her second term in office last week - thanked U.S. lawmakers and the American people for their support of the reunification of Germany after the wall came down (on November 9) in 1989.

But the chancellor called on U.S. lawmakers to focus on current walls, including the problem of climate change. She urged lawmakers to support a global climate agreement at the December climate conference in Copenhagen. Frequently interrupted by applause, the chancellor also reiterated Germany's support for security in Afghanistan and Israel, and said a nuclear bomb in the hands of Iran is not acceptable.
