Gnome/KDE file associations

Gnome/KDE file associations

Since KDE has been added, there's been the unfortunate side-effect of
some KDE programs running in GNOME undesireably. (Eg: double-clicking a
pdf file launches kpdf instead of gpdf.)

Links (Skip ahead for a summary):

To summarize:
1. Gnome uses /usr/share/applications/defaults.list to pick programs to
run, and in its absence picks seemingly randomly, causing KDE programs
to be run sometimes instead.
2. KDE uses InitialPreference, an entry in the .desktop files, to
determine the file association, the highest number entry in all the
.desktop files gets the program

Currently, without a defaults.list file, gnome is essentially picking at
random what to use in association with a file when double-clicked, be it
kde or gnome programs. Now, with a defaults.list file, it's possible to
tell gnome where to go for different file types. As KDE uses a
different system(and will until/if freedesktop.org adopts defaults.list
as a standard), it would appear, to me at least, that the best course of
action is to create a standard defaults.list that uses all gnome
applications, and drop that in a package that's grouped with gnome.

I've tested this on my system, and to my pleasure, I now have gnome
running just gnome apps, and kde running being itself. hehe.

I've started a defaults.list that I've attached to this e-mail... I
think we should look at this carefully... Slide this into
/usr/share/applications and things should work.

The downside, depending on how you look at it, is that if you are
running Gnome, and click on a file that has no association you might end
up with a KDE application running. If there are no associated GNOME
apps at all, but there are KDE apps, you will definately have a KDE app
run. (Vice-Versa also applies.)
