when I start erl in the terminal as root, there is a warning:

'no display name and no $DISPLAY environment variable'.

# export DISPLAY=:0.0

Try merging Xauthority file first:
[b]> sudo xauth -f /root/.Xauthority merge .Xauthority[/b]

Now you can run gui as root
> sudo gui
