Access Sentinel-1 GRD products as SAFE with Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF
Sentinel-1 GRD products are now available on the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem also as SAFE with Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG_SAFE). The COG format allows easier access to the data at different scales without the need to download the entire files. By converting GeoTIFFs to COGs the file size has been reduced by about 15%. COG_SAFE products are available for all new data acquired after 1.1.2022. At the same time, the entire archive is being converted to COG_SAFE and the converted products will be added gradually starting with the newest products and ending with the oldest data from 2014.

The COG_SAFE products are identical to the original GRD products in terms of metadata content and format and also in terms of measurement data values. Only the original GeoTIFF measurement data files have been converted to Cloud Optimised GeoTIFF format.

The COG_SAFE format will be available as immediately accessible data (IAD) for all historic data. The original SAFE packaged data will be available as IAD for the latest one year, and available as deferred accessible data (DAD) otherwise. In case original Sentinel-1 GRD products older than one year would be needed with immediate access, users can convert COG_SAFE products to the original SAFE products using COG2GRD tool.

A lossless compression Zstandard was used for COGs to ensure the best performance when streamlining the data. Note that SNAP currently does not have a support for reading the files compressed with Zstandard thus COG_SAFE products cannot be opened in SNAP. It is planned to add support for COG_SAFE products in SNAP in the future.
