海湾战争期间，当时的美国国防部长拉姆斯菲尔德（ Donald Rumsfeld）有一个著名的说法：

“There are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we do not know we don't know”

世界上有我们知道我们知道的事情；有我们知道我们不知道的事情；还有我们不知道我们不知道的事情。他对媒体说这句话的时候连他自己都说得无比别扭，所以被西方媒体评为当年的最佳语无伦次奖。拉姆斯菲尔德策划了伊拉克解放战争，他能力排众议发明并实施全新的作战样式例如主要用特种作战部队突击制胜，现在看来的确是胆识过人，现在IT工业的知识管理行业（KM）里都在引用拉氏的这句话来说明知识管理是干什么的。我再一次引用是为了说明系统管理员的职责和职业层次：

1. 解决用户知道他们知道的问题。有许多问题企业用户自己知道怎样解决，自己能发现瓶颈在什么地方，但是因为他们要是自己解决这些系统管理问题就会增加企业管理成本支出，影响他们把主要资源用于核心业务，这种情况下把这些他们知道的事情交付给管理服务商（Managed Service Provider）派来的系统管理员来做是个好主意。
2. 解决用户知道自己不知道的问题。例如，用户要部署ERP管理企业各种资源但是不知道开源软件世界里有众多免费和低成本的选择；企业不可能雇佣所有开发和管理维护人员，他们知道公司资源不足以部署数据中心。
3. 解决用户不知道自己不知道的问题。例如，许多企业还不知道他们对云计算和数据中心还闻所未闻，革命性的技术进步给社会生活的改观、革命性的商务模式和商业业态都属于不知道自己不知道的事情。系统管理员应该把最新的技术进步以最快的速度集成到管理服务中。
   

云计算时代的系统管理员：云管理员（ Cloud Admin）：在云计算环境下，系统管理员的职责和功能都发生了巨大的变化，好像有调查表明，到2012年全世界有20%的企业自己不再拥有IT财产，就是说他们把自己的IT软硬件、业务数据等等一应俱全转移到了云平台上面，真的是IT doesnt matter!了。

• Google公司的系统管理员Tom Limoncelli，他也是技术作家，在本周澳大利亚的Linux大会上说：“在虚拟化和云计算环境下系统管理员的职能和要求都改变了” 
• O'Reilly说：“所有云需要云管理员”
• Canonical:Technical support in cloud，Ubuntu和Eucalyptus。云技术支持，Ubuntu把混合云平台Eucalyptus集成在最新的发行版10.4里面。

?  Lots of experience setting up and running Linux servers in a production environment.
?  Experience tweaking Apache, PHP, and MySQL for performance.
?  Experience running MySQL in a clustered configuration.
?  Experience with virtualisation (VMWare and Xen) and cloud architecture (Amazon‘s EC2 and S3) is a plus, but not mandatory (provided you’re excited to learn).
?  Great work ethic. Must thrive in a fast-placed, creative team environment.
?  The occasional crazy idea.
?  It goes without saying you require excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team.

?  Good command of written and spoken English
