The popularity of AI will gradually cool down, and AGI

Cay Horstmann, who is over 60 years old, is the author of the classic Java works "Java Core Technology" and "Java Core Technology: Quick Learning Edition", helping countless Java developers to enlightenment and advance. As of today, Cay has been working in the software field for over 40 years, but his personal connection with Java is unusual, starting from the early days of Java.
In 1995, Cay's friend Gary Cornell called him and said, "We're going to write a book about Java."
At that time, Java had not yet been officially released. So Cay replied to him, "Apart from media reports, I know nothing about Java." He knew Gary's situation was the same, "and you also know nothing about Java."
Gary said, "But I have already received a publishing contract."
Originally, James Gosling (the father of Java) was unwilling to distribute books through the publishing house Sun Microsystems Press, and the two sides fell into a dispute. After learning this news, Gary informed the editor of the publishing house that he happened to know a suitable person to write this book.
So, Cay and Gary went crazy learning Java during that Christmas period, and they had three months to complete this work. Fortunately, Cay had not yet graduated from his professorship and was able to obtain Java source code under a research license - this was much earlier than the open source era, when Java source code was only open to researchers. It was precisely because they were able to access the original source code and understand the actual functionality of Java that they discovered that the initial version of Java did not fully comply with the official documentation and even had many vulnerabilities.
They published their first book that truly revealed the operation mechanism of JDK: Core Java, which was immediately a great success. With the rapid development of Java, the two constantly updated their content, all the way to the current 13th edition. For programmers who already have a foundation, Cay has also launched a separate "Core Java for the Impatient" series, allowing developers with experience in other programming languages to quickly get started with Java application development. The Chinese version of "Rapid Learning" was just published in 2024 and updated to Java 17.
