Opinions on "Corrupt zlib stream"?

What happens, is that I constantly get this message when trying to run aeod, which is two Pk3 files.

I know this message might appear when there was a problem(corrupt) with the compression of the file (or so I've been told), and that would make sense if the file giving me the problem was the one that gets modified constantly. However, that's not the case.

It's the other file, a 329mb file, which hasnt been modified since 08/10/2010 (that's what windows reports me). I know the file is pointlessly huge and all, but I never got any report from aeod users about it not functioning properly, so this tells me Im the only one with the problem.

Now, I've taken several actions to try to ensure the file isnt being modified by accident. For one, I never do. That file is never edited one bit. Then I decided to make it "read only" and while doing that, I noticed win7 have another couple options right there in the same "General" tab; at the bottom I have "security" -> unblock (maybe it says "unlock" in english, dont know) and Advanced. In the latter, I also see a checkmark on "Allow this file to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" that keeps coming up even though I disable it. Could windows mess with it's contents? I doubt it, but with windows, I just dont know anymore :P

So, anyway, I also have a "safe" copy (also "read only") of the file giving me issues, and by "safe" I mean a copy that is completely OK. No issues on that file. And yet, every once in a while, even creating a copy of this safe file and using it, gives me the error. What puzzles me the most is the fact that sometimes, rebooting the computer does the trick and it will work again with no problems. That's like 60% of the cases.

Bottom line: I dont know what's to blame here. I thought the problem could be my hard drive, since it always has been kind of quirky. But then again, when I think it twice, it sounds like ram could be the issue. Any ideas on what could be my problem here? I practically never had any other issues while playing other stuff (completely different games), just ocassionally a crash, but its not common. So, it seems to be something between (g)zdoom, big files and my computer.

PS. Also, this issue appears when Im using "Super Doom 3" (another big file (178mb)), so it's not exclusive to aeod, more like exclusive to big files. And another weird occurrence, I was playing happily, and suddenly, after 20 minutes or so, I was kicked out of the level into the console, with this message "corrupt zlib stream". I went to the menu to reload the gameplay I was into, but again, after reaching certain point, it did the exact same thing; funny thing, I would've been expecting zdoom to crash, but no, it only kicked me out of the game.

Yes, it says "Unblock".

You get that on archives that you download. What should happen when you access files from within a zip with this button is that Windows security will ask if you are sure you want to access the files because it can't guarantee the safety of where they came from. Clicking unblock removes the unblock button (it won't be there the next time you check the file properties) and stops the "are you sure" messages. So, it's a Windows safety/security feature to try and prevent you getting malware etc.

Oh! thanks for the info. Indeed, I was able to get rid of that, and actually, for now, the "Allow this file to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" also is gone. Let's hope it stays that way.

On the main issue, actually, since that keeps happening, even after rebooting, the issue is still there. Somehow, sometimes works if I copy paste the whole directory into another location. Cut/paste doesnt work, so Im guessing the directory structure in the OS is nothing but a huge array of pointers (no real location change, just where it's ponting to) in the hard drive; which again leads me to think the HDD might have something to do with my issues, but it seems kind of farfetched at the same time.

Precisely.

What happens if you recompile the archive on a different physical drive?

Hmm good point. In order to do that I must first decompress everything and build it up again (please tell me the doom format images will retain their offsets!).

As is I have 2 version of the file, dont know how or why, but one "corrupt" and the other "clean". At least one runs in zdoom while the other dont. Funny thing, one is a copy (copy I just made some minutes ago) of the other file, with no changes but filename.

While extracting the "corrupt" version, I just saw that 2 files seem damaged (2 sounds actually). So, I guess this file was corrupt after all.

Now, extracting the "clean" version... well, this takes some time indeed.

They will, that information is in a sort of "tag" inside the file.

Why wouldn't they? It's part of the image metadata after all.

In all the graphic formats I've added to Slade, there is only one I have found where the offset info is not part of the graphic lump itself: Wolfenstein 3-D, which is horrendously coded. Then I suppose you have Build tiles, if you were to extract the data it contains into separate chunks, since offsets (and dimensions!) are stored in the collective header.

Oh, excellent. I knew about PNG, but I was unsure if the doom format would retain them :)

OK, it finished extracting "the clean" version, but it also shows 2 files corrupt (completely different files). So, I guess I dont really have a non-corrupt version.
