BI has 3 parts: Integration, Analysis, Reporting (Data Visualization)
Crystal Report is the oldest report tool created by SeaGate;
In 1999, Microsoft bought Crystal Report and bind it to .Net.
2005, Microsoft copy 99% of crystal report and call it SSRS.
Tableau has 6 major products:
Tableau Desktop/Public/Server/Online/Reader/ Mobile
Desktop/Public have same type of functionality;
Difference:
-Desktop supports 50+ data sources, enterprise version not free;
-Public supports 4 data sources, but it is free;
Tableau Server is similar to Report Server: deploy report to the server, subscribe
Tableau Online: combination of Tableau Desktop + Server, but cloud system (on-line service): $2,000/yr per user; performance and security are slower/lower than Desktop;
Tableau Reader: open Tableau Workbook (combination of Tableau report, sheet), Extension: .tbw or .tbwx
Two types of jobs for Tableau:
-Tableau Developer is for Tableau Desktop;
-Tableau Administrator is for Tableau Server;
Tableau 4.1 (first version) comes in Sep, 2008 (Self-service BI Tool/Application): 4 charts
Tableau 9.0 - May 2015;
Advantage:
-no need to write query;
-Connect to 50+ Data Sources;
(Ad-Hoc in SSRS still needs developer to set up a template, not exactly self-service)
-Tableau Public is the free version;
Get data from Server, then save it as .TDE (Tableau Data Extract) file
Live/Extract connection:
-Live Connection: we need live data;
-Extract connection: we need old data for analysis purposes;
#, ABC, “Global” are Data Types
Filters>Add
Context Filter: at the time of data selection from data source, we filter data for better performance
Hierarchy is automatically generated;
Easier to make visually more presentable reports (BI)
Columns/Rows/Pages/Marks/Filters Shelf
Tableau automatically separate Measure & Dimension once connected to the Data Source;
Data Blending: data from different sources (SQL Server, Google, Oracle, etc)
Dashboard: 8 sheets (4 sheets for graphs, 4 sheets for tables)
Brief Description of ur experience:
Extract data from different Data Sources such as SQL Server Tbl/View, Excel,
Then create charts out of these data
Combine all reports into the dashboard
