ENME 2530: Dynamics II

Fall 2024

Welcome

Welcome to Dynamics II! I am thrilled you have chosen to learn about Dynamics, my own field of study. I am passionate about this topic and hope you will leave this course with a greater appreciation of Dynamics. I have designed this course to be a hands-on exploration of Dynamics that will be a true team effort between you, your peers, and me. If you put time and energy into this course, I hope you will leave it feeling accomplished and that it will be an intellectually rewarding experience.

Course learning goals and description

(1)Students will demonstrate a deeper understanding of dynamics, particularly as applied to two dimensional and  three dimensional rigid body motions. (2) Students will demonstrate ability to solve various types of vibration problems, using appropriate methods.

Course learning outcomes

After successful completion of this course, students will have mastered the following topics:

Kinematics of Rigid Bodies

•    General Plane Motion

•    Instant COR

•    General Plane Motion: Velocity/Acceleration

•    Motion of Rigid Body in Space

•    Motion Relative to Moving Reference Frame.

Kinetics of Rigid Bodies

•    Plane Motion of Rigid Bodies: Forces and Accelerations

•    Constrained Plane Motion

Kinetics of Rigid Bodies in 3D

•    Energy and Momentum for a rigid body

•    Motion of Gyroscope

Mechanical Vibrations

•    Vibrations without Damping

ENME 2530: Dynamics II Fall 2024Matlab •    Free vibrations of rigid bodies

Course format

We will use Canvas for course organization, asynchronous content delivery, and assignment submissions. Matlab will be used fairly extensively for HW assignments and projects. CamScanner is a useful (free) app that you may use to convert hand-written assignments into electronic pdfs for submission. I recommend that you keep physical records of your work used to complete online  assignments.

Required materials/texts

Required:

●  Textbook: F. Beer and E. Johnston, Jr., P. Cornwell, and B. Self, Vector Mechanics for Engineers:Dynamics, 11th or 12th edition, McGraw-Hill.

●   Connect Integration

Assessments (How you will demonstrate your learning)

This course includes a project, homework, readings, quizzes, exams, and class engagement. The purpose of the project is to give students an opportunity to use the skills you learn to demonstrate course objectives in real-world applications

Homework assignments will be due weekly throughout the quarter, consisting of several assignments (see Class Calendarfor up-to-dateassignmentsandduedates).  Each assignment will be worth equal points and will be submitted via Canvas.  Late homework will be scored with a reduction of 20% for each day late.

Short quizzes will be held throughout the quarter, usually at the beginning of class. Reading material (typically a book chapter) will be assigned one week prior to the quiz related to material covered in class. Missed in-class quizzes can be made up. Your lowest quiz score for the year will be dropped.

One exam will be given during the quarter. The exams will be taken in-person. You are expected to participate in class discussions and activities.

Late work policy

Late work will be accepted using Canvas that will automatically deduct points based on the number of days that the assignment is late
