access layer The layer that feeds traffic into the network and performs network entry
control. End users access the network via the access layer.
access A that provides remote access to a corporate intranet or extranet over
a shared infrastructure with the same policies as a private network.
accounting (auditing) The process of keeping track of a user’s activity while accessing
a network’s resources, including the amount of time spent in the network, the services
accessed while there, and the amount of data transferred during the session.
ACL (access control list) A set of data that informs a computer’s operating system which
permissions, or access rights, that each user or group has to a specific system object, such
as a directory or file. A means for controlling or limiting network traffic. An ACL compares
different criteria to a defined rule set.
