How to Plan a project

A number of companies today are hiring people to manage a large number of projects. The things that these companies are looking for are productivity and the ability to lead a team towards the successful completion of a project.

Those who are skilled a project management must be organized, and they must also be able to make quick decisions. If you are interested in being a project manager, you must know how to plan a project. In addition to this, you must also be task oriented. Your primary goal as a project manager is to start and finish a project within a set period of time, and make sure it is done correctly.

To become skilled a planning a project, you must be able to think conceptually. The biggest mistake made by many project managers is skipping this stage of planning. To plan your project successfully, you must start with defining the results that can be measured rather than the details of each individual task. Those who pay attention to the intricate details of each task will likely become trapped. Once the project is actually in progress, the tasks can change from one person to another. When this happens, it generally means that the project manager does not have a good vision of what the project must achieve. If more tasks need to be added while the project is in progress, this will greatly increase the costs involved with finishing it.

When you plan a project as a project manager, you cannot allow everyone on your team to have their own vision. The entire team must develop one vision, and they must stick to this vision until the project is completed. The vision of the team should match the vision of the client they are catering the project to. When a project fails, it is often a result of poor planning at the beginning. The job of the project manager is to make sure this doesn't happen. A clear vision must be established at the beginning, and the success of the project should be defined before it starts. If you are the project manager, you will be responsible for raising difficult questions with the stakeholders and sponsors.

The most important thing that you must get from them is their definition of success for the project. You must understand what they are looking for. Once you get the answers, you will have the foundation that is necessary to begin the conceptual thinking process. If you don't know the desired result of your clients, it will be next to impossible for you to produce a product that is acceptable to them. In addition to this, you will not have a clear vision that you will be able to share with your team. Conceptual thinking is one of the most important aspects of properly planning your project, and it cannot be done successfully if you don't understand the needs of your clients.

The best way to visualize a project is to look at it as a group of achievements that are linked together. This chain can be most effectively created by starting at the end. The reason why I say the end is because this is the part of the project that will deal with the needs of the client. The end goal must be well defined. It must perfectly match the goals of the client. When a project manager is given a project to complete, many of them will start by focusing on the details rather than the big picture. By doing this, you may make the mistake of missing the "big picture" of what the client is looking for because you paid too much attention to details at the beginning.

If you are working with more than one client or stakeholder, there may be conflicts in what they all want. While handling this situation may be tedious, it is much better than failing to give them all what they are looking for. You must act as a middle man between the groups, allowing them to reconcile their differences and come of to a consensus of what they are all looking for in the project. Properly handling the front end of a project is the most difficult part, because if you fail at this point, it is likely that the entire project will be a failure.
