what is crab effect?

when put crabs in the relatively low water lever, only one crab,it maybe can climb to outside of the box. but if there are many crabs, they will pyramid,the following situation will happen, there is always one crab on the top,and another one in the bottom, at the money, the crab who is in the bottom will not allow it ,it will pull at the legs of the crab.and at last all all crabs can not reach top of the pool.that is the crab culture

people who caught crabs  have experience that crabs in the basket ,there is no need to close the lid,no one can climb outside of the basket
