Jailbreak

The jailbreak itself does not yet allow you to do much. In fact, it only installs an additional "developer" key on the device, allowing for the installation of additional packages via the Kindle's own update mechanism.

This method works on Kindle 4 version 4.0.0 through 4.1.1.

Carefully read all of the instructions below, and follow them only after you have read everything and are sure what to do.

Download and unzip the jailbreak.

1. Plug in the Kindle and copy data.tar.gz and ENABLE_DIAGS to the Kindle's USB drive's root
2. Safely remove the USB cable and restart the Kindle (Menu -> Settings -> Menu -> Restart)
3. Once the device restarts into diagnostics mode, select "D) Exit, Reboot or Disable Diags" (using the 5-way keypad)
4. Select "R) Reboot System"  and  "Q) To continue" (FW left)
   
5. Wait about 20 seconds: you should see the Jailbreak screen for a while, and the device should then restart normally
6. After the Kindle restarts, you should see a new book titled "You are Jailbroken", if you see this, the jailbreak has been successful.

SSH

If you don't (SSH on diags is disabled on newer devices, like all Black Kindles from fall 2012), or if you prefer to have an SSH access from the main system (along with a few other nifty features, like SSH over WiFi), install theUSBNet hack.

1. 下载kindle-usbnetwork-0.47.N.zip文件，解压后找到update_usbnetwork_0.47.N_k4_install.bin文件，将其复制到kindle的根目录，复制完毕弹出设备，按菜单选“settings”，再按菜单选“Update Your Kindle”，安装完毕会自动重启。
   
2. 再次连接USB，kindle目录下新产生usbnet文件夹，进入将 "DISABLED_auto" 文件名改为"auto"；打开etc/config文件，将K3_WIFI="false"和K3_WIFI_SSHD_ONLY="false"，改成true。
3. 断开usb，连接wifi，在kindle的settings界面，同时按键盘键和右面的下翻页，进入711页面，可以看到IP地址，

   ssh 192.168.x.xxx -l root

   初始root密码，可由设备序列号Serial Number得到：点击打开链接
   

   mntroot rw

4. vi /usr/java/lib/font.properties 
   

   编辑下列行

   hans.0=MHeiM18030_E.ttf
   hans.plain=MHeiM18030_E.ttf
   hans.1=MHeiM18030_E_Bold.ttf
   hans.bold=MHeiM18030_E_Bold.ttf

   修改为自己的字体，字体文件放在/usr/java/lib/fonts目录下。
5. 完成后

   mntroot ro

6. 解决书籍标题及未设定语言的书籍的字体显示问题，

   当Kindle回到正常模式后，在主界面中按键盘键调出虚拟键盘，输入：

   ;debugOn –>确认键
   ~changelocale zh-CN.utf8 –>确认键
   ;debugOff –>确认键
   

   重启Kindle
