Whether you know me or not, the chances are, if you recognize the name WeLoveNoise, you might also be familiar with my logo.

背景故事 (Backstory)

This was the first logo I created for WeLoveNoise back in 2009 which I affectionately called “the bleeding heart”. It was heavily inspired by the disruptive design movement of the 90s/00s where designers, artists and studios such as David Carson, Stefan Sagmiester, Joshua Davis and the Designers Republic would often challenge standard conventions and create impactful work that was beautiful, expressive, unique and meaningful.

It’s this blend of design, art and experimentation that I still find so inspiring today. So back in 2009, I wanted my own brand identity to be something that embodied all those characteristics.

Not to dive too deep into my old logo because looking at it now gives me a somewhat nauseous feeling (due to all its flaws), but I still love what that mark stood for. It was the first piece of brand work that I truly had an emotional attachment towards.

To break it down;

The heart represents the love in WeLoveNoise

The displaced forms exploding out of the heart are a nod to the music equalizer to represent Noise.

The entire process of making this logo was very experimental

It’s by no means groundbreaking, but it was unique and meaningful to me and still holds a special place in my heart (no pun intended). The name WeLoveNoise is actually a cryptic way of saying I Love Design without being so literal about it, so the heart plays a big part in communicating the rationale.

Over the years I’ve thought about redrawing this logo many times (and have many different explorations in development) but about two years ago, I became the father of an adorable little girl and everything changed.

Admittedly, I wasn’t ready to have a kid. I’d never really held one and I was useless at interacting with them. Over the last two years, my little Faye has taught me to open up, stop giving a shit, take risks and live in the moment. She’s transformed me in a way I’d never thought. Something you can’t put a price on and can’t say thank you enough for.

To that end, and as I embark on creating a new portfolio I couldn’t help but wonder if the bleeding heart is still applicable to me. Eventually I came to the realization that although I still love the logo… I love Faye way more. So I wanted to prove it in a way that’s meaningful to me and decided to transfer the heart from my logo it into Faye’s new one.

The (idiomatic) phrase “birds of a feather” meaning “people having similar characters, backgrounds, interests, or beliefs”. In old poetic English, “birds of a feather” means birds which have the same kind of feathers, so the proverb refers to the fact that birds congregate with birds of their own species.

(惯用的)短语“羽毛鸟”的意思是“具有相似特征，背景，兴趣或信仰的人”。在古老的诗歌英语中，“羽毛鸟”是指羽毛相同的鸟，因此谚语指的是鸟类与自己的鸟类聚在一起的事实。

The logo is constructed by a series of feathers (map pointy shapes) that come together to form the letter F for “Faye”. It’s then duplicated and flipped to create another F for “Finch”. Finally those two letters are snapped together to create the love heart.

The shapes I used were inspired by the feathers of a bird because Finch is our family name.

I used the primitive elements of the mark to create other pieces of art such as posters, a typeface, patterns and illustrations.

I don’t expect Faye will ever use this in the future and to be honest, Idon’t think I’ll ever suggest it either. This is really just a piece of poetic art — my small gift to her.

Here’s what WeLoveNoise logo now looks like.The new mark has a double meaning. It continues to use the music equalizer metaphor from the original logo but I have synonymously made it look more like an elevated heart monitor reading, which feels more fitting for the type of work I do these days, creating delightful, exciting and uplifting experiences.
