I designed my modular to be used with a computer. At times, it feels like I’m in the minority in this regard. Many people seek refuge from their computer when they turn to their modular. I don’t personally experience computer fatigue, and I’m loathe to give up the capabilities it adds to my modular, particularly in the meso and macrostructural domains. A large part of my modular practice is informed from the traditional methods of creating a complex arrangement through multi tracking, and my computer fulfills the role of recorder, editor and mixer.

Given my modular+computer design focus, certain functions like DSP, recording, monitoring and mixing are relegated to that area. There are a handful of components I’ve added to my modular that infringe on that territory and I thought I might share what those are and why I use them.

Headphone amplifierNearly every synthesizer has a headphone jack. You’d be surprised how many modulars don’t have headphone jacks. Even if you don’t use a computer to monitor, if you don’t have a headphone output, you have to connect a mixer to provide one. If you own a modular without a headphone jack and add one, it’s a revelation. A headphone jack transforms a modular from a tool to an instrument.

Space is a limited resource in any modular. While it is possible to fill an entire room with modules and cases, it is at the expense of usability and portability. I use Intellejel 104HP cases which include a row for 1U modules. This format is perfect for simple modules like headphone amplifiers.

DSPMy first DSP module for my modular was the Z5000 from TipTop Audio. That was also the first DSP module created for the eurorack format. I still have my original Z5000 module, but the depth of this module does not fit in the more current, shallower-depth-style cases popularized by skiffs. The newer version of the Z5000 does not have this issue.

The 1U format is still nascent, and I have a surplus of 1U real estate. The Intellijel Multi FX 1U module is incredibly inexpensive ($129 retail) and doesn’t consume any standard module space. One kind of reverb I use a lot are large, highly-diffused spaces and the Multi FX does this without the metallic edge you get from cheaper reverbs.

Modular-format DSP can not compete with the depth and variety of software offerings, so, for myself, DSP is primarily a computer-based activity. Now that I have the Multi FX though, the barrier to adding a little signal processing to my patch is much lower and I end up using it a lot.

MorphageneMy modular is primarily based around synthesis. I have an east coast area, a west coast area, wavetables, physical modeling, and scanned synthesis. One module I was curious about that doesn’t neatly fit into these areas was the Make Noise Morphagene.

I bought a used Morphagene to try it out. It was very much on probation from day one and I was not committed to it at all. You can’t walk up to a morphagene and start using it if you’ve never read the manual or used one before. There are three buttons and numerous chording gestures to get the morphagene to do fairly basic tasks. So, right off the bat, the Morphagene had a lot to overcome to earn a permeant place in my system. I eventually reached a tipping point where I could either let it go or double down. I called up Make Noise and after talking with them, I decided to double down in the form of adding a QPAS and Mimeophone to build out a complete version of their ‘tape music system’

What the morphagene does, is something that I do a lot already, but on the computer. With access to more processing power, polyphony, user interface, storage and memory, a computer is a much better platform for various granular synthesis techniques. At the same time, I spend a lot of time creating physical interfaces to work with granular synthesis to make it more performative.

The Morphagene somehow manages to sound great, offer a performative interface, and CV integration, while allowing me to treat audio more like play doh. I can capture mesostrucutral phrases, play them as loops and seamlessly zoom into a small grain to create a tone and back out again, all without glitching. It’s spell-binding and sometimes is so good it feels like cheating.

WAV recorderThe most recent addition to my system is the 4ms WAV recorder. On the surface, the wave recorder looks like a direct assault on the codependent nature of my modular with a computer. It’s not, but it is understandable why it looks that way.

My use case for the module is quite simple. Have you ever been using your modular and said to yourself, “gee, I’d like to quickly sample that” Then, what follows is connecting a computer, cables, audio interface, setting levels, recording and then managing audio files.

I don’t want to make a whole song, and I’m not looking to create an Ableton project just to capture whatever 16 seconds of audio I’m interested in (and then subsequently losing or forgetting about that project)

A 32GB SD card can hold around 50 hours of audio. I can keep the recorder patch into my modular outputs, and then, if I feel like capturing something, I just press one button. Files are automatically numbered and all my “hey, I should capture this” audio is in one place. When recording, the outputs pass the recorded signal, so you can monitor what you’re recording. The aggregate accumulation of this data is a supra-temporal activity.

Stereo microphone / USBIntellijel has a 1U tile that provides USB power. I can think of many use cases for this, but after getting the Morphagene, one quickly realizes the best material to work with comes from microphones, not signals from the modular. I needed a low-barrier method of connecting a stereo mic to the Morphagene inputs. Traditionally, this involves a stereo pair of microphones, a stereo bar, a mic stand, a stereo mic preamp, cables from the mics to the preamp and cables from the preamp to the modular. That’s a lot and represents a significant barrier. For me, one of the worst parts about connecting ANOTHER piece of gear is power, and that’s where the USB power port comes in.

I use a Tascam DR-40 recorder (it is old and discontinued, replaced by the DR-40x. You don’t need this model, you just need a model that will pass though audio, most do) which attaches to a standard camera tripod mount. The DR-40 can be powered with batteries, and that’s great for field recording, but not for this application. It can, however, be powered over USB. The recorder will happily output a nice stereo line level signal without recording anything and hooking it up to my modular couldn’t be simpler.

I now have a soup-to-nuts hardware system to capture, manipulate, augment, transform and ultimately record audio. What I can do only gets more powerful when I connect a computer, but the immediacy of results I can achieve with these modules is transformative.
