Switching jobs is one way, but not the only way. As a designer, there are steps you can take to minimize your impact on the planet. Here are 6 areas to focus on, with suggestions on how to get to started in only 60 minutes. ⏰

The commercial world has used techniques grounded in Behavioral Science for decades, mostly to get us to buy more stuff. What’s new in the past few years is that Behavioral Science theory went mainstream, and designers incorporated it into design thinking to create a new field: Behavioral Design.

Behavioral Design uses a scientific understanding of what drives human behavior (Behavioral Science) to design products and experiences that guide people towards certain actions.

Every designer should have a solid understanding of how most products and services that surround us have been intentionally (or unintentionally) designed to:

By reclaiming the Behavior Design toolkit for purposes other than consumerism, we can work to change society’s defaults and create products and services that are instead designed to:

If you design physical products, it can be easy to understand your products’ environmental impact. If you’re a UX Designer building software, it can be a bit more opaque.

Three things to consider when considering your work footprint are:

Smaller apps take less energy to store and serve, so its good practice to remove all unnecessary code. There’s also value in optimizing/simplifying your designs and code, so that fewer resources are used on whatever machine it’s running on. Even small changes can have a huge impact if your software is being run at scale.

Example: One developer refactored his code to send 20 KB less data. Which is tiny, but because 2 million sites use his code, it resulted in monthly savings of 59,000 CO2 output (equivalent to flying roundtrip from NY to Europe 85 times a month).

Are there points in your product’s journey in which the user can make a more planet-friendly choice? If so, you can use techniques from Behavioral Design to make those options prevalent and motivating.

Example: Many restaurant delivery apps let you choose to not receive plastic silverware in your order. Placing the choice in a prominent location and labeling as “Eco-friendly” may help make this more appealing.

This is an interesting one: a few months ago I would have shared tips for more productive remote meetings to cut down on work travel, but COVID-19 has already shifted our travel norms. As we continue to be productive during these challenging times, we should think about how to maintain the climate-friendly aspects of remote collaboration post-shutdown.

We know that diverse teams make better decisions. We also know that we can’t fight climate change without understanding its full range of impacts. Climate justice teaches us that some communities are wildly, disproportionally impacted, and that is sadly by design. We will create better climate solutions when highly-impacted communities are co-creators and our design teams are meaningfully diverse.

When I was a hiring manager several years ago, I wasn’t great at achieving this. We tended to mostly hire people from schools and companies that we were already familiar with and connected to, which led to a fairly homogeneous design team. Here are ways to do things differently.

It can be a balancing act to make a living while staying true to your highest ideals and only taking jobs that match all of your values. One way to help you evaluate new roles, projects, or job opportunities is to create your own design ethics principles. You probably already have these in your head in some form, but formalizing them can be enlightening.

Once you have your principles, make it more normal to have and discuss design ethics by sharing with your colleagues.

It can also be helpful to expand your definition of a climate-friendly job. Some non-obvious products could be environmental wins, such as video conferencing software, remote collaboration apps, or supply chain tools. And perhaps a company has internal environmental initiatives that aren’t directly tied to their products.
