Product management is a very diverse domain and is great for people who are more inclined towards being a generalist. It’s a great option for developers who not only love to code but also understand the other aspects of your applications like design, architecture, and the business side of the things.

There is a set of both hard and soft skills that you will need to develop over time to become an awesome product manager.

(The Hard Skills)

(1. Problem-solving attitude)

When we are given a problem can we find a unique, different, and feasible solution to it or we just feel like giving up on it? That problem-solving attitude is the thing we need to become a great product manager.

Programming definitely helps us improve the way we think and approach a problem when we are trying to solve it, hence that skill will pay-off so much when we move into product management.

Be someone who exercises the mind in an effort to reach a decision.

(2. Passion and understanding of technology)

The best part is that we don’t really have to be a kick-ass coder or a gadget geek but we should be able to appreciate and understand how different apps, technologies, and products work.

This skill would also come in handy if we don’t want to be laughed at by the engineers you would be working with.

(3. Deep understanding of the users)

Many times, we might fail enough to really understand your end-users who actually are gonna use your product.

There might be people from different cultures, backgrounds, very different from you and your perspective. Research and invest your time in understanding them.

You should be able to build an application that is inclusive.

(4. An eye for a good user experience)

When there is a particular problem you might be trying to solve through a feature, there can be multiple ways to implement that feature where your user will go through a journey of steps to actually complete it.

You should be able to think and compare these different user-experiences and evaluate them to make the decision on which path to chose for your users.

Connecting the use of technology with a great user experience is a must-have skill for a product manager.

(5. Strong business sense)

This is where I have seen a lot of developers lacking, including me. The sooner we realize and start appreciating the business side of the problems, the better for us and our companies.

It really doesn’t matter how technologically good our system/application is if it doesn’t fit the business timeline and feasibility.

As a Product Manager, we should be able to help make the trade-off wherever required to build the right application for the users with the right technology meeting the business goals.

Keeping an eye out for the companies business goals while delivering the product is another important skill to have.

(6. Understanding analytics)

Data is what drives businesses today. The ability to understand and extract out insights from the data that your application is generating can help you make the right decisions for your product as well.

Again you might have data-analysts or data engineers in your team, you should be able to communicate and understand them, you don’t have to be the expert at it.

(The Soft Skills)

(1. Leading without authority)

PM is a thankless job, you will have to work and lead people who don’t actually report to you. You will be the one pushing the team with solutions, ideas, the good stuff while all the problems, challenges, the bad stuff are gonna be thrown back to you.

You will have to keep the team together and moving forward in the right direction to deliver the right product with all your diverse skills and understanding.

Invest your time into people-skills so that you can lead people without the power of authority.

(2. Being able to communicate with your team)

It’s not just your speaking communication skills but also your written communication skills as you will be communicating through emails, chats, presentations most of the time.

The ability to put down your thoughts and ideas in a way that the receiving end can understand it with no ambiguity is a tough skill to develop but will definitely pay off.

Like they say, communication is the key.

(3. Ability to take feedback)

Everybody around you, even your users will have ideas and complaints around improving your product no matter how good it may already be. The ability to take all that feedback, absorb it, process it without taking it personally.

If your goal becomes to make everyone happy, then you will end up getting a lot stressed and will never actually be able to make everyone happy.

Be smart about others’ feedback, know what to filter out and what to take in, and make decisions.

(4. Being able to prioritize)

You will have a lot of ideas and solutions to work in a definite amount of time with a definite set of resources, hence you simply can’t have everything-ever.

This is where a subset of project management skills will come in to help you and actually be able to filter out, identify and prioritize key components of your product to be able to start working on it and deliver the product in time to the users.

“Listen more, talk less and be decisive when the time comes.” — Staya Nadela

— Staya Nadela

(To Sum Up)

I think you can understand, just like the sports team coaches who don’t really have to be the top athletes in their field but should have the ability to understand the players, their strengths and weaknesses, use them to guide the team to the win.

When they do win, everybody appreciates the team and they might get all the credits, but it wouldn’t have had been possible without the coach. Similarly, the product manager is the person who is bridging the gap between the business and technology understanding and appreciating both of them to deliver the product in time.
