The Programmer's Exam tests your knowledge of the basic Java language. It's a difficult exam, and passing it tells the world that you are able to make approprlate use of all aspects of the language.

Between these covers you will find a review of all the Information you need to become a Sun Certified Java Programmer.

Is This Book for You?

The Sybex Exam Notes books were designed to be succinct, portable exam review guides. We designed this book primarily for Java programmers who are about to take the Sun Certlfied Java Programlner's Exam. You know who you are. This book is terse enough to serve as' a memory ald and technical reminder of everything you need to know as you prepare for the exam. If you are unfamiliar with some of the concepts presented here, you may want to supplement your study with the Compfete Java 2 Certification Study Guide (Sybex, 2000}, by Simon Roberts, Philip Heller, and Michael Emest. The Study Guide provides thorough explanatlons of concepts that thls book assumes you are familiar with.

Our secondary audience is anybody who wants a handy reference gulde for the Ins and outs of the Java language. If you want to use this book for that purpose, we certainly won't stand in your way. In fact, we think it's a great idea.

How Is This Book Organized?

Sun publishes a Ilst of specific exam objectives, the topics you need to master to pass the test. This book covers those objectives. For a complete Ilst of the objectives, take a look inslde the front and back covers of this book. Sun organizes the objectives into IO groups. This book covers each group In a separate chapter. When you look at the contents of each chapter, you see how the chapters correspond to a group of Exam objectlves, grouped and ordered in exactly the way Sun presents them. You also see that thls book is deflnltely a revlew guide rather than an introduction to Java. Our main goal is to make it easy for you to determine whlch objectives you need to work on, and to leam more about those objectlves.

As a result, some of the chapters are quite long, while others are quite short. In the publishing business there is a taboo against very long chapters, and even more so agalnst very short chapters (like Chapter 3, "Garbage Collection," which we hor}e will set a world record for Shortest Chapter in a Java Book). We decided that if we didn't break a taboo or two, we couldn't present you wlth the best possible organization. Wlthin each chapter, the indivldual exam objectives are addressed in turn. The following sectlons dlscuss each objective section in the book.

Critical Information

The "Critical Information" sectlon presents the greatest depth of detail about the objective. This is where you'll find the explanations. It is tempting to say that this is where you'll find the meat of the chapter, but this book Is publlshed in Califomia, so let's just say that this is where you'II find the proteln of the chapter. This is the place to start If you're unfamlliar wlth or uncertain about the technlcal issues related to the objective.
