In our efforts to improve society, we must keep in mind that everything in life is not always predictable. For example, things such as raising a family, coping with illness, making a decent living and preparing for old age are common things in life that we all must face. These things do not always happen the way we plan.

我们在努力改善社会之际，必须牢记的是，人生的种种一切并非都是可以预测的。举例说吧，像养家、抵抗病魔、过象样的生活、为防老做准备等等，这些都是我们必须在人生中要面对的平常事。这些事并不一定会按我们的计划发生。

Society is nothing more than a community. When we discuss the kind of society in which we want to live, we must remember its purpose. The reason why we must have society is to help people have the best possible life. In short, society should help people live their lives. If society helps us overcome the unpredictable obstacles we all face in life, it will make life even more worth living.

社会不仅仅是个小区而已。我们在讨论我们想要生活 的社会型态时，就必须要了解它存在的目的。社会存在的理由就是要帮助大家过最好的生活。简言之，社会应帮助大家过生活。如果社会可以协助我们克服大家在生活中无法预知的障碍时，它将会使人生更值得过。

语法重点

1. 介绍 worth, worthy,worthwhile 的区别及用法：

a. worth  值得

1) 之后置表价钱的名词作宾语

That house is worth at least $1,000,000.

那栋房子至少值美金一百万美金。

2) 之后置及物动词变成的动名词作宾语，此时主语亦同时作动名词的宾语

John's suggestion is worth considering.

(主语 John's suggestion 同时作 considering 的宾语)          

约翰的建议值得考虑。

3) 之后置含介词的短语及物动词的动名词形，此时主语亦同时作该介词的宾语

David often lies, so his words are not worth paying attention to.

(主语 his words 同时作 to 的宾语)

戴维常说谎，因此他的话不值得听。

b. worthy  值得……的(与介词 of 并用，形成下列固定结构)

be worthy of + 名词 值得……

John's suggestion is worthy of all our attention.

约翰的建议值得我们大家的注意。

注意：worthy 亦可表「值得景仰的」，之后置名词。

Being a soldier is a worthy career.

当军人是个令人景仰的职业。

c. worthwhile [ :wRH`wZIl ] a. 值得(花钱或努力)的(常用于下列结构)

It is worthwhile to V 从事……是值得的

= It is worthwhile V-ing

= It pays to V

例：It is worthwhile to learn English.

= It is worthwhile learning English.

= It pays to learn English.

学英语是值得的。 

2.  本课最后一句即采 "worth+ V-ing" 的结构：

If society helps us overcome the unpredictable obstacles we all face in life, it will make life even more worth living.(句尾的 living 是及物动词 live 变成的动名词，表“过”，宾语为之前的 life。live a healthy life 过健康的生活；live a meaningful life 过有意义的生活)

如果社会可以协助我们克服大家在生活中无法预知的障碍时，它将会使人生更值得过。
