以“Security Architecture for the Internet Protocol” 为标题的RFC奠定了IP的安全架构的基础，而以此为标题的RFC一共有3篇。
 
每一篇提出之时，也就是一个系列的RFC发布之时，也代表了一代IPsec 理论：
1995年，8月               RFC 1825 ～ RFC 1829
1998年，11月              RFC 2401 ～ RFC 2412
2005年，12月              RFC 4301 ～ RFC 4312
每一个RFC分别说明IPSec 体系的一个组成部分，除了“Security Architecture for the Internet Protocol”。
