报告人摘要：

A large number of Information Retrieval algorithms such as language retrieval models and query reformulation models have been proposed to enhance the performance of retrieving relevant documents , where the assumption that the users' information needs are unambiguously conveyed by their submitted queries is usually made. Previous studies, however, showed that most queries can arguably be considered ambiguous to some extent as users may not express their underlying complex information needs well with the inputted queries. To tackle the ambiguity of the queries and to make sure that at least one of the retrieved documents satisfies the users' underlying information needs, a number of Search Result Diversification algorithms have been proposed. These diversification algorithms can be categorized into either implicit or explicit ones. In this talk, we first point out the motivations of diversifying search results in information retrieval. We then provide a brief survey on implicit and explicit search result diversification algorithms including those we proposed recently. Finally, we discuss the future work of search result diversification in information retrieval and other computer science areas.

Shangsong Liangreceived the Bachelor and the Master degrees from theNorthwest A&F Universityin 2008 and 2011, respectively,and a Ph.D. degree from theUniversity of Amsterdam,The Netherlands, in 2014, supervised byProf. dr. Maarten de Rijke (Editor-in-Chief of the ACM trans. on Information Systems),all in the field of computer science. He wasa postdoctoral supervised by Prof. dr. W. Bruce Croft (ACM Fellow) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, U.S.A, andcurrently is a research associate atthe University College London, U.K. His research interest is information retrieval and data mining. He has published in a number of venues such as SIGIR, KDD, AAAI, WSDM, CIKM, ECIR, TKDE and Information Processing & Management. He is an Editor member of Information Processing & Management (Feb. 2016--present). He served as PC member in SIGIR 2017/2016/2015, ECIR 2017 etc, and reviewer for ACM TOIS, ACM trans. on the Web, IP&M, SIGIR 2014/2015/2016, CIKM 2015, ACL 2016, AAAI2017, ECIR 2017 etc.
