Hello, my name is Pini Dibask, and I'm a product manager for Database performance monitoring with Quest. In today's video, we'll reveal Foglight for Oracle and show you how it is best suited to monitor your Oracle database environments.

Foglight for Oracle is a 24X7 enterprise monitoring solution, which allows you to effectively monitor all your databases. Featuring deep resource monitoring capabilities with a powerful analysis tool set to enable fast problem resolution and proactively fix issues before they become a real problem.

This solution also provides a set of rich out of the box in-context and enterprise reports. With a low overhead, agent-less architecture, Foglight for Oracle monitors Oracle database environments for both physical and virtual deployments. This solution supports all editions and configurations, including Standard Edition both on premise and in the cloud.

Let's start with the monitoring aspect of the product. Foglight for Oracle is part of Foglight for Databases' heterogeneous solution, which allows you to monitor your entire environment across domains from a single view. This solution supports monitoring traditional relational databases such as Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, SAP ASE; open source relational databases, such as Postgres and MySQL; and also NoSQL databases, such as MongoDB and Cassandra. It's also supports databases which reside in the cloud, so we can cover both on premise and cloud deployments.

Here we can see the Foglight global view page, which is the first screen that you can see, once you log into the product. The global view page provides high level monitoring information for your entire cross-platform database environment and can easily address specific common DBA questions, such as which instances have the highest workload, which instances haven't been upgraded to the latest release, which instances have been available for the longest duration.

Foglight for Databases provides dozens of comprehensive out of the box alarms, dashboards, and reports, which you could access directly from the global view page.

When analyzing a potential problem, it is crucial to understand whether the observed behavior is normal for that environment. Foglight for Oracle's small baseline algorithm understands your environment profile and maps expected behavior in different time periods, hour in a day, day in a week, week in a month, and so on. For example, it can tell you whether your host resource's utilization is within the expected baseline range or deviating from the baseline.

It also allows you to spot real changes in the normal activity and avoid wasting time in looking for the problems. Additionally, you could easily understand whether your instance workload is within the expected baseline range.

Foglight for Oracle has a rich monitoring coverage, covering high availability architectures and disaster recovery solutions, such as Oracle real application clusters and Data Guard, comprehensive storage monitoring for ASM tablespaces. It's update to date for the recent technologies, including full support for the Oracle multi-tenant option, providing both historical and real-time views.

The overview dashboard is the starting point for getting to the root cause of any issue, as it covers all aspects of the instance at a glance, showing availability of the instance, pluggable databases, and underlined related services, status summary of high availability and disaster recovery solutions, and highlight storage utilization metrics. It uncovers any OS resource bottlenecks, including virtualization issues. It detects operational failures, including job failures and alert log messages. It also provides performance insights into resource consumption, workflow trend, throughput, and sessions activity.

In the right section of the overview dashboard, you could view a list of alarms, as well as top 10 SQL statements ordered by the active time. The Oracle alert log file is one of the main indicators for your instance health. The Oracle alert log monitoring feature allows you to view all the messages distributed by the associated alarm severities. Alert log related alarms will be filed accordingly.

Foglight also provides out of the box and customized alert log message filtering. So you can either add messages or modify existing expressions, such as changing their severity level. This feature is also available for the ASM alert log file.

The tablespaces dashboard displays the storage utilization of your database table spaces. The allocated size use percentage tells you how much storage is used out of the entire allocated data files for the tablespace. The total size use percentage considers also the disks on which the auto-extend data files reside.

The ASM dashboard provides all the storage and performance related information for the ASM disk groups and disks allocated to your ASM instance. We can see the allocated disk groups, and for each one of the disk groups, its associated disks.

Click the disk group for additional storage and performance information, such as read and write operations. Click the ASM clients to discover all Oracle instances

which are using the disk groups managed by the ASM instance. This also tells you whether these instances are already being monitored by Foglight, and if not, they can be monitored by a single click.

The multi-tenant option is a great feature for implementing database consolidation by managing many pluggable databases as one big container database. Foglight for Oracle comes with a full pluggable databases monitoring coverage. View the instance PDBs and their associated workload. For each PDB, we can see storage performance and availability indicators. You can also view the performance of a specific pluggable database versus the entire instance or rack activity, displaying the actual metric value and its percentage out of the entire instance or cluster activity.

Oracle's fast recovery area is a central storage location, which stores recovery-related files, such as archived read logs, RMAN backups, and flashback logs. Understanding the fast recovery area health is super important for DBAs. With Foglight FRA dashboard, you could view the storage utilization, as well as a usage breakdown. It can also show you what version of the space is reclaimable and what is non-reclaimable. So in case of space pressure, you will know whether Oracle will be able to purge the files to free up
