Besides, if you are still a student, and you are just starting to learn a language for general purpose, Python is indeed a good starting point. It is easier to learn than C++, and it is widely used by both strategy development, risk managemant, and other areas.
Furthermore, it is completely free with a lot of libraries.
Of course, there are also firms who use MATLAB, but MATLAB is not free, and it may not be as easily available as the freeware Python.
