摘要:
Geophysicists for a long time have employed acoustics to research problems throughout the solid earth, the hydrosphere, and the atmosphere, using in these mediums signals from both natural sources and man-made sources. Although each of the propagating mediums has its unique problems, there is much similarity in the methods used to measure, record, display, and analyze the acoustic signals. In this article the author describes an application of acoustic techniques to the study of thunderstorms by utilizing thunder as the acoustic signal. My coworkers and I feel that a recounting of these methods with the inherent difficulties and the successes will reach a broad, sympathetic readership in EOS.
