Look darling, it's not you, it's your... it's your pronunciation! Be honest with me! Have you ever said 'cook-ed, ask-ed, play-ed or want-ed'? Well if you have, you..you need me. Lucy from English with Lucy. My very innovative and creatively named English language Youtube channel. I'm gonna help you with your -ed pronunciation, because it is a difficult concept to grasp,  but I'm sure. If you work hard, You'll be speaking like a native in no time! So if you have already learned how to create the regular past simple or past participle verbs, then you know that you have to take the root infinitive, and then add ed or if the verb already ends of e, just add d. Then one mistake many student make is the pronunciation. Unfortunately with English, you can not pronounce the words how they are written. So, /ed/ played, danced, it doesn't exist. You need to forget about /ed/. I never ever ever want to hear again. So this actually quite a simple way to find how to pronounce each past simple and past participle words. And it all depends on the last consonant sound, not just the letter, it has to be the sound of the root verb. So the first ending sound is /id/-wanted, needed. And we know we have to pronounce /id/ when the last consonant sound of the verb is either t or d. So normally if ends in t or ends in d, we know we need to say /id/. I wanted to go to the toilet beause I needed to pee. That was the first example that came into my head. But I think it is a good real life situation, some gonna keep it. Ok,so the next sound is quite difficult to say beause you actually forget this vowel here. So you just taking away a syllable, you need to remember when you have the ed word, you have to take off this ending and add this one instead. So instead of saying helped, I am saying helped. We can tell which of the consonant sound go with t, beause they are voiceless which means when you say them on their own with our any extra voice, there should no vibration in your voice box. So... These ones go with /d/ instead of /t/, so the different pronunciation is very very subtle. But if you want to sound like a native, you really have to differentiate between the two of these. This one tends to be easier beause you adding an extra syllable. And these ones more advanced,so we got... see I am not adding another syllable, I am just straight on from the consonant to /d/. So two important ones to look at are laughed and loved, the vowel sound is slightly different... Another one that student struggle with is washed and watched. So ideally you not going to want to have to have a conversation in English and studdenly go one second,~ that is. I kissed him. So I think if you keep practicing, you start to get to know which sound goes with which ending. And just make sure no ones listening.
