大多数人使用电脑(computer)收发电子邮件(email)或做文字处理(word processing)也可以用电脑上互联网(Internet)、玩电脑游戏(computer game)或者看DVD。使用用户名(username)和密码(password)登录(log in/on)。用键盘(keyboard)键入(type in)文字，利用打印机(printer)打印(print out)文件。在显示屏(screen)上显示信息，用鼠标(mouse)选择图标(icon)。数据(data)以文件(file)形式存储在硬盘(hard disk)、优盘(flash drive)或只读光盘(CD-ROM)上。用来运行计算机的程序(program)称为软件(software)。办公或家用的电脑称为个人电脑(PC)或台式电脑(desktop)。便携式电脑(laptop)是可以随身携带的小型电脑。平板电脑(tablet)更小且扁平，靠触摸屏操作。
