今日文章解读：

The monks prefer winter to summer for they have more privacy. The dogs have greater freedom, too, for they are allowed to wander outside their enclosure.

修道士们喜欢冬天，而不太喜欢夏天。因为在冬天，他们可以更多地过无人打扰的生活。狗也比较自由，被放出围栏，四处遛达。

wander和wonder只是一词之差，前者是溜达，后者是想知道。注意区分。

(1)prefer … to … 宁愿…而不愿，或，喜欢…而不喜欢…

The monks prefer winter to summer for they have more privacy.

prefer winter to summer表示喜欢冬天而不喜欢夏天。

prefer表示更喜欢，就近原则，prefer winter就是更喜欢冬天。这样来记prefer … to …

也有prefer to放在一起使用的情况表示“宁愿”“喜欢”

We prefer to stay where we are. 我们宁愿保持着现在的样子。

还有prefer to … rather than … 作为 prefer to的延伸。

We prefer to die rather than surrender to the enemy. 宁死不屈。

(2)allow sb. to do sth. 允许某人做某事

… they are allowed to wander outside their enclosure.

在这个句子中，表面上不太满足allow sb. to do sth.的格式，是因为句中使用的是被动语态。they are allowed，它们被允许。

For the safety of the students, we don't allow the student to drive any vehicles while they are in US. 为学生安全起见，我们不允许学生在美国期间驾驶任何车辆。

(3)come down to引出原因的用法

前两天分别介绍了now that, as引出原因状语从句，今天来介绍一个come down to。

come down从字面意思上来看，表示“下来，降落”等，没有明确的表示原因。

come down to则可翻译为“归根结底”，就是引出了原因。

It partly comes down to profit-driven business models that are built around low-wage work and part-time jobs that don’t provide benefits.

部分原因在于利润驱动的商业模式。这种模式建立在低工资工作和不提供福利的兼职工作基础上。(句子取于大学英语六级)

我们先来拆分一下长难句。

It partly comes down to profit-driven business models (that are built around low-wage work and [part-time jobs) that don’t provide benefits].

在这个句子中，有两个that引出的定语从句。

第一个that来修饰models，第二个that修饰前面的jobs。

学会这样的复合性的定语从句在我们在写作中得以应用的话，还是效果非常明显的。

所以希望大家在学习英语的时候，不要只是知道句子的意思就打住，要知道分析句型，这样才能写好句子。这个句子难吗？都是简单句，通过了that从句写得很长而已。不要被长句子一下子打倒哦。
