Northern higher latitude environments are undergoing marked climate change with associated shifts in the dynamics of phenological and cryological phenomena. Remote Sensing has enabled the study and modelling of many phenomena, including natural hazards, over global, regional and local spatial scales as well as over long temporal scales. However, increasing levels of Earth Observation (EO) data collection, with new sensing possibilities, require, in order to meet new environmental challenges and application possibilities, a matching pace in the development of algorithms for processing and analysing these data. Whilst Nordic countries have long been active in developing sensors for EO, algorithms for data processing, and data applications, a platform for bringing together Nordic work in Remote Sensing has been lacking for several years. The relevance of a platform has even greater timeliness now, with nanosatellites built by several Nordic Universities operational in Space for EO, and new possibilities of developing sensors for better understanding of the changing Nordic environment. This Special Issue on Nordic Remote Sensing, of the International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation, will therefore report recent advances in the broad field of Remote Sensing activities undertaken in the Nordic and Arctic countries. The Special Issue will be based mainly on presentations at the Nordic Remote Sensing Conference 2019 (NoRSC’19): Data Acquisition, Algorithms and Applications, to be held at Aarhus University, Denmark, from 17-19 September 2019, that meet the requirements of the journal.

Model and full-scale measurement technologies for marine applications have been continuously challenged for their advancements. This can be related to increasing complexity and demands of the real-world applications as well as the rapid developments in computers, computational resources and methods. Advanced Model Measurement Technology for the Maritime Industry (AMT) Conference Series have been organized bi-annually since 2009 and this year 2019 is the ten years’ anniversary for AMT conference. AMT’19 will be held in Rome on contemporary experimentation topics including:

· Detailed flow visualisation, measurements and analysis

· PIV / LDA /High-Speed Video operations

· 3-D wave field measurements

· Pod/Dynamic forces

· Wireless data transmission

· Intelligent materials and production methods

· Wetted surface measurements

· Free-running model tests

· Underwater radiated noise measurements

· Nuclei measurements

· Coatings / Fouling controlperformance measurements

· Drag reduction mechanisms and performance measurements

· Measurements and Experimental uncertainty analysis techniques

but not limited to other maritime applications involving smart and advanced measuring equipment and techniques in model and full-scale.

Problem There are many cases in which tunnels, foundations and other underground constructions are subjected to soil movements and passive loadings (which can be due to tunnelling, mining, deep excavations, sinkholes, consolidation, slope movements, landslides). Consequently, engineers need to predict the resulting SSI that has potentially detrimental effects on both the foundation and the structures above and below ground.

Current practice Although fully coupled soil-structure interaction models have been successfully developed by researchers and practitioners in the recent years, when possible geotechnical engineers rely on empirical rules and decoupled models to predict movements of foundations and subsurface structures, while structural engineers evaluate damage and distortions by performing decoupled analyses of the structures by imposing displacement profile at the soil-structure interface. When fully coupled soil-structure interaction models are recommended by guidelines, no specific indications on the required level of details are provided. Hence, there is a need to better identify the key aspects to be considered for integrated geotechnical and structural interaction models.

Goal This special issue of Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology will discuss viable approaches, with varying level of complexity, when performing advanced coupled numerical analyses of the soil-foundation-structure interaction rising from ground movements. The aim is to identify key aspects that need to be accounted for in the geotechnical and structural domains to achieve an optimal level of complexity for reliable and still accurate predictions. In particular, to evaluate the impact of accounting for detailed geotechnical and structural aspects on the SSI and the associated risk for losses of serviceability performance, researchers are invited to compare their SSI model results against predictions obtained with current simple routine design approaches (among others, estimations inferred from empirical approaches and/or results obtained from the assumption of fully flexible structures or equivalent linear elastic solids).
