Nowadays Lisp is seldom used in AI research. Schools don't teach young researchers/practitioners Lisp. And AI is AI, if you know how to do one application, you do it in any reasonable language you like. The hard part is the algorithm, not the tool. There are just too many good tools/languages today.
Linking LISP with AI was in the old days when languages such as Fortran and C were too low level and other languages didn't have strong and portable implementations. Therefore, tool/language building for AI was important that time.
