8. Making Maps with Cartoee

8.1. Introduction

Unlike desktop GIS with rich functionality for creating high-quality maps be to used in journal publications and project reports, cloud computing platforms (e.g., Earth Engine) largely lack interactive functionality for creating publication-quality maps with essential map elements (e.g., legend, scale bar, north arrow). This chapter introduces the geemap cartoee module that can be used to create publication-quality maps from Earth Engine datasets and processing results without having to download data. The cartoee module does this by requesting png images from Earth Engine datasets and processing results (which are usually good enough for visualization) and cartopy is used to create the plots.
