Virtual Private Network technologies - Types

Generally we have two types of Virtual Private Network:

1. Site-to-Site. It's also called L2L(Lan-to-Lan) or S2S(Site-to-Site).

The protocols used in S2S:

• ATM
• Frame Relay
• GRE
• MPLS
• IPSec

The ones we often talk about are MPLS and IPSec.

The most popular one for S2S is IPSec.

2. Remote-Access

The protocols used:

• PPTP
• L2TP + IPSec
• IPSec
• SSL

The ones we often talk about are IPSec and SSL.

And the most popular for remote-accessis is based on SSL due to the simplicity.
