The UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has inscribed China's "The Twenty-Four Solar Terms" on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

二十四节气”(the Twenty-Four Solar Terms)是中国人通过观察太阳周年运动(observation of the sun's annual motion),认知一年中时令(season)、气候(climate)、物候(phenology)等方面的变化规律所形成的知识体系和社会实践。

A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains

Reporter:Freda Dilnar

Among the ten renowned paintings of China, two were born in the Song Dynasty.

One is "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" which captures the daily life of the people and prosperity of the capital.

The other is "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains" which eulogizes great rivers and mountains of the country.

"A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains" was the work of Wang Ximeng, a painter during the Northern Song Dynasty.

The painter pursued the "fun of right close thousands of miles" and this technique of expression amazed people.

In the nearly 12 meter long scroll, layer upon layer of valleys, rolling hills and numerous rivers have various shapes without any sense of repetition at all.

Details in the painting are impressive too.

Characters are as small as rice grains but vivid and lively.

Birds, simply painted, look like they are soaring.

The complete painting is both magnificent and exquisite.

It is different from traditional ink paintings. "A Thousand miles of Rivers and Mountains" is a representative work of blue and green landscape painting.

A large amount of mineral pigments including mineral blue and mineral green were adopted to make the whole painting prominent in blue and green colors, providing people with an aesthetic pleasure.

"A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains" is known as the greatest treasure of the Palace Museum.
