[Eclipse] Explore the editor extension in-depth

There are some kinds of editors like text editor, properties editor embedded into eclipse.For developers, it is their daily work to use editor to view and modify the code files in the eclipse workbench. What is possible is that we can not only use them in the workbench, but also can know how it works behind the scenes. To be further, it is necessary to extend the provided editors to meet your specific circumstance.

First of all, we need to create a class which is the subclass of AbstractUIPlugin since that editors need eclipse UI supports. class AbstractUIPlugin is the subclass of Plugin.There are some difference in the child plugin lifecycle between Plugin and AbstractUIPlugin because AbstractUIPlugin's subclasses have preference store storage.Both of Plugin and AbstractUIPlugin class implement the interface BundleActivator which means that the start and stop method in your plugin will run when eclipse platform loads your plugin.

public interface BundleActivator {
	public void start(BundleContext context) throws Exception;
	public void stop(BundleContext context) throws Exception;
}
Bundle is OSGI jargon word and it is equal to plugin term in eclipse. Here we use AbstractUIPlugin as parent class to create class JavaEditorExamplePlugin.

public class JavaEditorExamplePlugin extends AbstractUIPlugin {

	public final static String JAVA_PARTITIONING= "__java_example_partitioning";

	private static JavaEditorExamplePlugin fgInstance;
	private JavaPartitionScanner fPartitionScanner;
	private JavaColorProvider fColorProvider;
	private JavaCodeScanner fCodeScanner;
	private JavaDocScanner fDocScanner;

	/**
	 * Creates a new plug-in instance.
	 */
	public JavaEditorExamplePlugin() {
		fgInstance= this;
	}

	/**
	 * Returns the default plug-in instance.
	 *
	 * @return the default plug-in instance
	 */
	public static JavaEditorExamplePlugin getDefault() {
		return fgInstance;
	}

	/**
	 * Return a scanner for creating Java partitions.
	 *
	 * @return a scanner for creating Java partitions
	 */
	 public JavaPartitionScanner getJavaPartitionScanner() {
		if (fPartitionScanner == null)
			fPartitionScanner= new JavaPartitionScanner();
		return fPartitionScanner;
	}

	/**
	 * Returns the singleton Java code scanner.
	 *
	 * @return the singleton Java code scanner
	 */
	 public RuleBasedScanner getJavaCodeScanner() {
	 	if (fCodeScanner == null)
			fCodeScanner= new JavaCodeScanner(getJavaColorProvider());
		return fCodeScanner;
	}

	/**
	 * Returns the singleton Java color provider.
	 *
	 * @return the singleton Java color provider
	 */
	 public JavaColorProvider getJavaColorProvider() {
	 	if (fColorProvider == null)
			fColorProvider= new JavaColorProvider();
		return fColorProvider;
	}

	/**
	 * Returns the singleton Javadoc scanner.
	 *
	 * @return the singleton Javadoc scanner
	 */
	 public RuleBasedScanner getJavaDocScanner() {
	 	if (fDocScanner == null)
			fDocScanner= new JavaDocScanner(fColorProvider);
		return fDocScanner;
	}
}
Moreover, this class should also be declared in the plugin.xml ( an XML manifest file for describing plug-ins).

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<?eclipse version="3.0"?>
<plugin
   id="org.eclipse.ui.examples.javaeditor"
   name="%pluginName"
   version="3.1.100.qualifier"
   provider-name="%providerName"
   class="org.eclipse.ui.examples.javaeditor.JavaEditorExamplePlugin">

   <runtime>
      <library name="javaeditorexample.jar">
         <export name="*"/>
      </library>
   </runtime>
   <requires>
      <import plugin="org.eclipse.core.runtime"/>
      <import plugin="org.eclipse.ui"/>
      <import plugin="org.eclipse.jface.text"/>
      <import plugin="org.eclipse.ui.workbench.texteditor"/>
      <import plugin="org.eclipse.ui.editors"/>
      <import plugin="org.eclipse.ui.views"/>
   </requires>

</plugin>

For the %pluginName, we can use a properties file to translate them.After the plugin xml and class are created, the next step is to use the extension point. In regard of editor example, org.eclipse.ui.editors extension point is adopted as below.

  <extension  point="org.eclipse.ui.editors">
      <editor
            name="%javaEditorName"
            icon="icons/obj16/java.gif"
            extensions="jav"
            contributorClass="org.eclipse.ui.examples.javaeditor.JavaActionContributor"
            class="org.eclipse.ui.examples.javaeditor.JavaEditor"
            id="org.eclipse.ui.JavaEditor">
      </editor>
   </extension>
For the detailed explanation for extension point, please refer to  extension point wiki

class and contributor class are what you need to create and icon is the static image resource.
