DMS = database + instance;

What is a database?
Thrice model
1.physically – All kinds of files

database = data(*.dbf) + log(*.log) + control(*.ctl)  + ...;

The three most import files are .dbf, .log and .ctl;*

2.Logically – structed data format

**database** 
    --tablespace (naming space)
        --segment (table, index .... but not the same as the user view)
            -- extend (continual & in one file)
                -- block (basic unit )  

3.user view–

database = (schema) table + index + ...; 

warning: schema doesn’t belong to the tablesapce

What is instance?

instance = Memory + Processes;

Memory  = SGA + PGA + [UGA];
Processes = (process) background + server + user; 

SGA = shared pool (sql, data dictionany)  + buffer cache + redo log cache + ...;
PGA = the serve process info + session + ...;

background = smon + pmon + DBWn + LGWr + CKPT + ...;
