An architecture is a tool used to conceptually understand the structure and behavior of a complex entity through different views.

An architecture description is a formal description and representation of a system, the components that make it up, the interactions and interdependencies between those components,and the relationship to the environment.

A system architecture describes the major components of the system and how they interact with each other, with the users, and with other systems.

The term development refers to the entire life cycle of a system, including the planning, analysis, design, building, testing, deployment, maintenance, and retirement phases.

This design phase starts with the architecting effort described previously and progresses through the detailed description of everything needed to build the system.
