Java Python PHYSICS 101 COURSE INFORMATION

CRN 80781, Summer 2024

Course Description

Physics 101 is an introductory, conceptual oriented course in general physics with special emphasis placed on topics related to everyday experience. Topics include motion, work, energy, sound, heat, light, optics, electricity, magnetism, and some atomic and nuclear physics. The associated lab, physics 101L is highly recommended.

When both physics 101 and physics 101L are taken, they satisfy the G.E. laboratory science requirement. The intent of this course is to introduce basic physical laws and to develop the language in the physical sciences. The prerequisite is one year of high school algebra, or Math 100 with a minimum grade of C.

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Given a physical description of the problem, a student with a grade of C or above will be able to apply the laws of physics to explain the observed physical phenomena.

2. Given a physical description of the problem, a student with a grade of C or above will be able to think critically about the physical world and the laws that govern it.

Text and Materials:

Hewitt, Conceptual Physics, 10th  edition

The 10th edition.is an old edition. It will be used in class and for homework assignments.

MATERIALS

•    Notebook-sized paper  (roughly 8-1/2”x11”)

•    Scientific Calculator (during online exams an on-screen calculator will be provided for you) This is an online course, so you will need appropriate computer equipment to participate. For exams you will need to access a laptop or desktop with a webcam. Tablets and phones won’t work with the exam proctoring software.

Grading

Grades are based on 4 weekly quizzes, daily homework, online class discussions, and the final exam.  Your lowest three homework scores will be dropped. Grades will be based on your percentage of the possible total point distribution in each category, weighted as shown below.

Homework

There will be a few types of homework assigned that all fold into your homework score. Each assignment will be worth 1 PHYSICS 101 COURSE INFORMATION CRN 80781, Summer 2024R 0 points.

Homework Guidelines

1.   Late homework

      1.   1 day late                           -1 point

      2.   2 or more days late          -2 points.

2.   Homework more than 1 week late will not be accepted.

3.   Problem sets from the chapters will be graded primarily on completeness and quality. Be  sure to provide a brief “why” answer to all questions to get full credit, but you do not need to provide lengthy paragraphs. For numerical questions requiring calculations, show your  steps by hand and be sure to include units.

4.   More complete homework guidelines will be provided when homework is assigned.

Discussions

Online discussions will be assigned every week. This is a chance to interact with your peers. Each discussion will require an original post by the student, as well as two meaningful responses to other students. Initial posts will be due on Fridays, and replies will be due on Sundays. Initial posts which are posted later than Wednesday will lose one point for each day late. Late discussion posts (after Sundays) will not be accepted.

EXTRA CREDIT Progress Quizzes

Regular short multiple-choice quizzes will be given on the material covered. Each quiz covers one or two chapters. You can take each of these quizzes 3 times, and the highest score    will be kept. These quizzes are not required and there is no late penalty if they are not done on the due date.

For extra credit purposes, the total percentage of your progress quizzes will be determined at the end of the course, and converted into a maximum of 5 percentage points in your final grade.  For example, if you get 80% on your progress quizzes, you will receive 80% of 5 points— which would be 4 points--added to your final grade.

Weekly Mid-term Quizzes

There will be four weekly quizzes, given each Monday. Each quiz will cover the chapters covered that week (about 6 chapters per week).  Each quiz will be 25 multiple choice questions, and you’ll have 40 minutes.Tests will be comprised of primarily multiple choice questions, but other types of questions-- including free-form. answers or calculations-- may be included. Exams will be proctored by an online proctoring system using a webcam.

If you miss a quiz for medical reasons, you may make-up ONE of your weekly quizzes.  In order to be eligible for a makeup, you must notify me in a timely fashion, provide reasons why the   make up is required, and re-take the exam also in a timely fashion.

You will be given a long time frame. during the day of an exam (probably 7am to midnight) during which you can log on and take the exam. I recognize that since the class is online, students may be living in different time zones, or have a variety of work schedules.

Nevertheless, it is your responsibility to ensure that you take the exam during the times provided, recognizing that you could end up having to take the exam early in the morning or late at night.  It is also your responsibility to ensure you have arranged for internet connectivity during that time, and have an appropriate laptop or desktop available on which to take the exam.

Final Exam

The final exam will be comprehensive. If you do not take the final exam, you will receive a grade of 0 for the final exam.

The final exam will be given on Thursday August 8th, under a similar format and time frame. as the weekly quizzes. You will have 2 hours to complete the final once you log on. The Final Exam will be proctored by an online proctoring system using a webcam
