i think you can know what you will see when you succeed to install mysql server whitch your install fail won't tell you.
Somebody may don't know what shows install's success and get into a trap and boring for a long time.
Thought you fail to install the server,the system won't tell you about it and create the files from your failure install.
That's terriable.
And notes that if you think your server version is suit to your system platform the same time you can't install server successully,you can rpm -qa to search what you have installed about mysql,erase them and install the server again thus maybe you can solve your problem unexpectedly.
# rpm -ivh MySQL-server-community-5.1.48-1.rhel5.i386.rpm

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SET A PASSWORD FOR THE MySQL root USER !
To do so, start the server, then issue the following commands:

/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password'
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h zvin-laptop password 'new-password'

Alternatively you can run:
/usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation

which will also give you the option of removing the test
databases and anonymous user created by default. This is
strongly recommended for production servers.
