pNFS is a technology of parallel access,it gives client machines faster speed than traditional ones.Usually several times than ever.Do not look down upon the several times improvement,it uses software algorithm to solve the hardware bottleneck. That's greate ,but actually this technology transfers one real harddisk to several machines in order to make sure every client can access the data in a shortist time at the same time.
To be honest,it's not atotally new technology,it's based on the NFS(the recent version is V4.1) .and uses network connection to visit the layout files in the metasever, and than the layout file will give the location of the data client want, than the client will get the data from several NAS(Network-Attached Storage)storages.
This technology reduces the time a client get data from harddisk,in the traditional file system ,a client get data from a stationary harddisk totally,it's cost much time and hardware resources, but now with pNFS,a client can get data from many harddisks in the network with the help of the layout file and the network, this saves not only time but also hardware resources.
On the other hand, there is no perfect solutions in the world,pNFS has its own disadvantages, such as:it needs fast enough network transform speed and increases the cost of NAS servers and so on.Although it has so many disadvantages,it is also worth to do it to improve the data transform speed.
