In America, definition for poverty is “unable to obtain a minimum income to satisfy basic life needs”. Every state in America has its detail on defining poverty. For example in Boston, single parent family with less than 18 thousands dollars of income, double parent family with less than 22 thousands dollars of income, have the ability to apply for house refund. In the 50s of the 20th century, America has 39,500,000 people living in poverty, accounting for 22.4 percent of the total population. In 1969, the ratio decreased to 12.1 percentage, at around 24,100,000 people. In 1983, this ratio increased to 15.2 percent of total population, at around 35,300,000 people. In 2001, poverty ration was still at the height of 11.7 percent of total population, about 34,000,000 people.
后记:
I dont think the data collected by this post is accurate. Absoulutely, the author didnt give us the exact economic environment of those time when American probably was experiencing economic problems. However, i think the post reminds us of a problem, that is poverty exists everywhere.
