Lecture #2:How to Write an Abstract and aTitle

1.Abstract

1.1 Structure of the Abstract

Each subsection should contain 1-2 sentences, answering the following question:

  • Background
    • 1.What issues led to this work?
    • 2.What is the environment that makes this work interesting or important?
  • Aim
    • 1.What did you plan to achieve in this work?
    • 2.What gap is being filled?
  • Approach
    • 1.How did you set about achieving your aims?
    • 2.What did you actually do?
  • Results
    • 1.What are the main results of the study, including the numbers if appropriate?
  • Conclusion
    • 1.What are your main conclusions?
    • 2.Why are the results important?
    • 3.Where will they lead?

1.2 How to write an Abstract

  • Step 1: Write your paper first
  • Step 2: Understand requirements to write the abstract
    • Number of word limits.(e.g. No more than xxx words)
  • Step 3: Consider your audience
  • Step 4: Determine the type of abstract you must write
There are two primary styles of abstract.
    • (1)Descriptive abstracts explain the purpose, goal, methods of your research, but leave out the results secion(usually 100-200 words). They are best for shorter papers.
    • (2)Informative abstracts are like a condensed version of your paper, giving an overview of everything including the results in the paper. They are used for much longer and technique research.

1.3 Conclusion

Finally,an important goal of the abstract is to make it as specific as possible while still describing the full range of the work reported in this paper.

2.Title

1.1 Tips

  • 1.Once the abstract is finished,it is the time to write the title.
  • 2.We can use of the structured abstract to guide the creation of the title.
  • 3.In general, the title should reflect the aim and approach of the work.
    • Some of the background may have to be included.
    • Rarely are the results and conclusions even hinted.

1.2 How to write a title

  • Step 1:ask several questions about the paper.
    • Q1:What is your paper about?
    • Example A1: This paper makes a case for exploiting reliability heterogeneity to tailor redundancy settings to different device groups.
    • Q2:What techniques you design or use?
    • Example A2:We present HeART, an online tuning tool that guides selection of, and transitions between redundancy settings for long-term data reliability, based on observed reliability properties of each disk group
    • Q3:What are the results?
    • Example A3:HeART could provide target data reliability levels with fewer disks by improved storage efficiency.
    • All Keywords:
      • reliability heterogeneity
      • tailor redundancy settings
      • HeART
      • online tuning tool
      • improved storage efficiency
  • Step 2:write a sentence containing all keywords.
    • Example:This study designs HeART, an online tool to tailor redundancy settings and improve storage efficiency by exploring reliability heterogeneity.
  • Step 3:Delete all unnecessary words.
    • Example:This study designs HeART, an online tool to tailor redundancy settings and improve storage efficiency by exploring reliability heterogeneity.
  • Step 4:get the remaining keywords
    • Example:HeART, an online tool, tailor reliability seting, improve storage efficiency by exploring reliability heterogeneity
  • Step 5:reword the sentence
    • Example:HeART: an Online Tool to Tailor Reliability Seting and Improve Storage Efficiency by Exploring Reliability Heterogeneity
