范文:

Man Is to Survive

Man is faced with more and more problems which threaten man's existence on Earth. The resources will soon be exhausted. Many diseases can’t be cured. And the problems of pollution and population are also getting worse according to some studies.
Therefore, some people wonder whether man can survive in the future. We are running out of resources. We are suffering from those incurable diseases. Due to the pollution, we will not have pure water and fresh air which are necessary to our lives. The population is a big problem, too. The globe is getting overcrowded. The worst prediction of some people is that man will die out in the future.
They are exaggerating of course. But the situation is grave. We must do our best to make the world better for us to survive. We can find new things, such as solar energy to replace the energy sources being used today .With the help of science, we can also find new methods to protect people's health. And new ways can be carried out to prevent the pollution and control the population. In a word, we must not be afraid of the problems and be anxious all the time. It 's our turn to act actively to make the situation better to survive.

Should Firecrackers Be Banned?

Some people think that setting off firecrackers is a good thing. They say that it is an ancient Chinese custom which should be preserved. They also claim that firecrackers make festivals and holiday occasions more colorful and entertaining for both adults and children.
On the other hand, there are many people who say that firecrackers should be banned. They point out that firecrackers are responsible for fires which destroy property, and for injuries and burns suffered both by the people who set them off and by innocent bystanders. They also say that firecrackers are a waste of money and resources.
My own point of view is that we should preserve the old custom of setting off firecrackers, while at the same time making them harmless. We can do this by banning firecrackers from public places. In addition, we should restrict the setting off of firecrackers to festival days.

Do "Lucky Numbers" Really Bring Good Luck?

There are people who believe that some numbers bring good luck, while others bring bad luck. For instance, in China number 8 is thought to be lucky. Turning our attention to the west, we find that the number seven is considered lucky, but the number 13 is avoided like the plague.
In spite of all these claims, most people would agree that there is little evidence that numbers have any influence on our lives. In fact, they say, the reverse seems to be the case. For one thing, we might expect calculators to break down every time they note the number 13, and for another, although every week has seven days we know that not every week is lucky for us.
Weighing the pros and cons of these arguments, I am inclined to agree with the latter point of view. It is obvious that there is no scientific basis for the belief that there is a connection between luck and number. All in all, it seems to me to be superstition.

People learn more outside the classroom

Let me use another approach to support my opinion. Suppose there were two children ,the first limited to getting his knowledge entirely from the classroom, the second one able to get information from any source .Which would learn more? Most likely the second one because he would learn from his environment, from his parents, from the books he read, from TV, and from private study.
Both history and common sense suggest , therefore, that the greatest source of useful , practical knowledge comes from outside the school What we get in a classroom is only a small part of that total , but of a specialized and abstract nature.
I believe that we get more knowledge outside the classroom than we do inside. A classroom can give us only limited kinds of information. If we look at the beginning of civilization ,for example ,we win note that people back then did not have formal classrooms yet many of them were well informed. There were no classrooms to teach the first men how to plant or how to build huts. The great early poets of the first and second centuries didn't learn their poems in a classroom, nor did the women find out how to sew their clothes there.

Scientific Discovery ----Curse or Blessing

New scientific discovery nearly always brings to mankind a blessing. Take electricity for example. Since its discovery, it has ushered in an era of countless inventions in close connection with it. Nowadays people can read and write by means of lights instead of candles. Fire is another example of discoveries which made human beings survive in ancient times and generates electricity in modern times. Again, minerals such as oil or coal discovered by man have long been used as fuel to develop industry and agriculture.
Yet sometimes scientific discoveries may prove a curse upon the human race. As we know everything has two sides. Electricity can shock one to death if used carelessly. Smoke from factories and gases from cars are terrible pollutants. Radium used in nuclear power plants can lead to a nuclear war.
The misuse of scientific discoveries must be prevented. Since chemical elements or substances were discovered, some have been made use of for purposes of war. Such weapons as atomic bombs or poisonous gases have proved to be destructive to mankind. Therefore, it is the whole world's duty to prevent them which menace the human race.

Preferable Work

Some people prefer to work with people. Work with people usually makes one feel interesting and efficient. At the same time, it can give people power and competition and provides rivalry which can be a very effective motive in improving one's ability. In addition, people can get better ideas by way of consultation and conference with other people.
On the other hand, other people like jobs which mainly involve with objects or machine. They probably think that working with objects or machine will provide more peace and quiet. Under such peaceful conditions, one can do more practical work, improve one's skill and make technical renovations.
Of these two ways of working, I prefer working with people. First of all, I like working with people because of companionship. Second, although there are competition and rivalry, we can learn something from other people even if we don't like them.

Part-time job for College Students

There are some controversies on part-time jobs for college students. People who are against it hold that the sole purpose of higher education is for the students to acquire knowledge. If they are engaged in part -time job they will be invariably distracted from their studies and as a result they can not fulfill the requirements mapped out by the State Education Commission. The writer, however, thinks that there are several advantages for college Students involved in part-time jobs.
Firstly, part-time jobs provide opportunities for students to contact society so as to know the situation of the talent market. For instance, if a student works as a part-time governess, he or she will know what kind of professionals are urgently needed by the market and this will help him to choose a future job. Secondly, there are some financial gains from part-time jobs. Since the reform was carried out institutions of higher education have started to collect tuition fees from students. Doubtless to say this means another financial burden on parents. And part -time jobs can serve as a partial solution to this problem. Last but not least, part -time job can cultivate students, sense of independence.
To sum up, part-time jobs can do lot more good than bad to students as long as they can make best use of their time and raise the efficiency of their study.

Exams:

Good or Bad

Some students complain that they have too many exams. They seem to be always engaged in preparing for all kinds of quizzes or tests without any time to do something that really interests them. They suggest that exams be abolished. However, all schools have exams towards the end of a semester or after a session. There are some reasons for doing that.
First, knowledge needs rehearsal to be memorized. As we all know, before each exam students are always kept busy doing preparations. They are expected to go over the course books one by one and try to memorize everything learnt. This can serve as a sort of rehearsal to what they have learnt and help store the newly acquired knowledge into long-term memory for later use.
Secondly, exams can act as a kind of evaluation as to how much students can understand what is taught in class and how well they can put the knowledge into practice. A student who understands all concepts and formulas in the math class will take interest in solving difficult problems. And if he does succeed, the satisfaction and contentment he gains from doing it are beyond description.
Thirdly, good exams can develop intelligence. By providing correct solution to each question students not only learn the methods of science but also train their ability to deal with difficult problems which will do them a lot of good in developing their thinking.
So examinations at school are necessary and helpful. Student can strengthen their knowledge and at the same time develop their intelligence.

Car

Wherever one lives-in the city or in the country, there are some good reasons for owning a car. First, cars have become an important part of life in many countries. The car provides the most convenient form of transportation. With a car, a person can get around freely, without spending a lot of time. Second, a car is a comfortable way to travel, especially in the winter time. A driver stays warm and dry even in the cold, rainy weather. Finally, a driver is usually safe in his car when he is out at night.
There are, on the other hand, many good reasons against owning a car. For one thing, it can be very expensive to purchase and run a car. The gas shortage has caused a big problem for drivers, and the price of fuel continues to go up each year. In addition, it costs a great deal to maintain, repair and insure a car. For another, owning a car can aim cause worry and stress. It is exhausting to drive a car in heavy traffic. It often happens that a driver can be held up on his way because of a traffic jam. What is worse, cars are responsible for most of the smog in cities, which pollutes the environment seriously.
In spite of all the above-mentioned, I still favor owning a car. The reason is that the car gives a person the freedom to schedule his own time. Though we are confronted with a problem of energy crisis, I am sure that the real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that uses cheap, efficient fuel and does not contaminate the air.

Don't Hesitate to Say No

As a general rule, people like to help others, but there are occasions when you should say no to requests for favors. For instance, it is better to refuse when a child pesters you for sweet food and drinks or for too many toys. Another example is when a relative asks you to use yours influence to get him or her a bank loan or work promotion.
However, we cannot ignore the fact that many people are reluctant to say no. They feel that if they turn down a request from a relative or friend, they will cause ill-feeling within the family or become unpopular with their acquaintances. A notable case in point is when the boss asks them to do something which they feel is unreasonable.
It is important to keep in mind that not saying no when you should say no can sometimes have harmful consequences. If children are giver everything they ask for, not only may their health be damaged, but they may grow up selfish and spoilt. Again, in the long run it is kinder to re fuse to lend money to a person who has a gambling or alcoholism problem.

My View on Fake Commodities

Like most people, I welcomed the advent of the market economy. Nevertheless, it must be admitted that, along with the benefits of the market economy, have come problems. In my opinion, the biggest problem is the large number of fake and shoddy goods, which are found all over the country and do great harm to society.
Fake and shoddy goods are harmful on two levels. Some people think that the quickest way to make profits is by selling poor-quality commodities, and this undermines the nation's economy; at the same time, some fake and shoddy goods are bad for people's health. This makes consumers distrust the sellers, and the free market in general.
In view of the seriousness of this problem, it is essential that laws and regulations be worked out to ban the manufacture and circulation of fake and shoddy goods. At the same time, consumers should be educated to identify sub-standard commodities. With proper laws and an alert public, it will only be a matter of time before fake and shoddy goods become things of the past.

Haste Makes Waste

By "Haste makes waste" is meant that one should do everything step by step. Even simple operations can easily be spoiled if we rush to complete them, neglecting important stages in the process. One should make full preparations before beginning any task.
Take English study for example. Without a good command of pronunciation, we can never hope to speak in an understandable way. Similarly, if we do not learn to spell properly and to acquire a basic grasp of grammar, we will never succeed in writing good compositions.
In short, laying a solid foundation is essential if we want to make achievements in our studies or work, or indeed in any other aspect of our lives. At every step, review what has been achieved and assess the problems ahead before moving to the next step. And remember, Rome was not built in a day.

How I Finance My College Education

In recent years tuition and fees for high education keep increasing rapidly. How to finance your college education has become a matter of concern for many. There are many ways to support your college education financially. First, your parents may be able to provide all the money you need. Second, you can do a part-time job to get enough money. Third, bank loans especially set up for college students are also available.
As far as I'm concerned, bank loan is my favorite choice. For one thing, my parents do not have enough money to afford me. For another, you will find yourself too tired to study after doing a part-time job. In addition, I'm sure that I will have a good chance of getting a nice job after graduation, when I'll be able to repay the loan. Therefore, I prefer the bank loan.

Car Accidents Declining in Walton City

According to the graph, the rise and fall of the rate of car accidents in Walton City varies with the seasons. From January to March last year it increased by 68%, from March to June it dropped by about half the previous rate; and from June to August there was a steep rise of 66.6%. After that, however, there was a steady decrease, and this makes us optimistic that car accidents are declining in Walton City.
There are three reasons for this improvement. First, new traffic regulations have made drivers more careful, second, more people are using bicycles for transportation, and third, in the later part of the year good weather make the roads safer to drive on.
This year, major roads have been repaired and the number of public buses has been increased. Moreover, a traffic safety campaign has made all the local people more aware of the dangers of unsafe driving. So, I am confident that there will be even fewer car accidents in Walton in the future.

Film Is Giving Way to TV
(A)
The latest statistics show that the number of people attending cinemas is getting steadily smaller. At the same time, the number of television viewers is growing at almost the same rate.
Experts say that these two trends are connected in three ways. First, over the past few decades television sets have appeared in almost every home. Second, films very quickly become available on video, and can be shown on the TV screen. Third, it is becoming more expensive to make films, and so the prices of cinema seats are rising.
However, this does not mean the death of the movie industry. There will always be people who prefer to go out to see a film. This is because no matter how good a TV film or video is, it can never be as a film shown on the "big screen."

Health Gains in Developing Countries

The developing countries have made great strides in the health conditions of their populations. The above graphs show that between 1960 and 1990 life expectancy in these countries increased from about 40 to almost 60. At the same time infant mortality declined from roughly 200 deaths for every 1,000 births to around 100.
There are two main reasons for this improvement. The first is that the economics of those countries have developed rapidly in recent decades. And consequently (as a result), there is more money available for health care. The second is that the governments of developing countries are paying more attention to education in hygiene.
If this trend continues, developing countries will soon approach the developed countries in terms of health care. People will live longer and healthier lives. The result of this will be happier and more productive populations.

PRACITICE WITH TOPIC SENTENCES

Checking topic sentences

Your topic sentence should tell the person who is reading your paragraph what the paragraph is about. Read the following paragraph and decide whether the topic sentence is strong or weak. (The topic sentence is underlined.)

Baseball is a popular sport in the United States. There are two teams of nine players each. Players on one team take turns batting, and other team tries to put the batters out. The batter hits the ball and then tries to run around the bases and get "home" safely. The other team tries to put the batter out by catching the ball before it hits the ground, throwing the ball to the base before the batter gets there or by tagging the batter with the ball. The batter can stop at any one of the three bases if it is impossible to make it "home."
The topic sentence in the paragraph is weak because it tells us that "baseball is a popular sport ", but the rest of the paragraph tells us how baseball is played. A stronger topic sentence would tell us, the readers that the paragraph is going to describe how baseball is played. Here is a stronger topic sentence.
Baseball, a popular game in the United States, is played in the following way. Now the reader knows that the paragraph will describe how baseball is played instead of where it is played or who plays it, or why it is popular.

1. Even though the procedures followed to enroll in an American university vary according to each university, some steps are the same. First, you should contact the registration office of the university you want to attend to get the necessary forms and information concerning that particular university's entrance requirements. Then you must follow the steps outlined in their response. You will probably have to send copies of your high school diploma, get letters of recommendation, and write an essay on why you want to study there. You may have to achieve a certain score on the TOEFL test and have your scores forwarded to the university. Finally, you will have to contact the American embassy to start the procedures to obtain a student visa.

2. I like to go to the beach whenever I have the opportunity. I start the day by enjoying a refreshing swim. Then I walk along the beach and collect shells. Later you'll find me relaxing in the warm sunshine and making sand castles. Then I sleep for a while before I open the basket of food and drinks that I always pack to take.

3. Many students can not afford a car. The city bus service usually passes the university, so those students can get to class on the bus. Many universities have a special shuttle bus that is provided for student transportation. Some students like to ride to class on bicycles. This is good exercise. Also, it is easier to find a space to leave a bicycle than to find a parking space for a car on a crowded university campus. Those students who live close to campus or on campus can enjoy a leisurely walk to their classes.
