• service set :  In computer networking, a service set is a set consisting of all the devices associated with a consumer or enterprise IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN). The Service set can be local, independent, extended or mesh.
• basic service set (BSS): 最简单的情况为：一个AP加一个station组成BSS。

• basic service area (BSA) ------- AP覆盖的区域
  

• extended service set (ESS)：两个或者多个BSS共享相同的SSID等。对外表现为一个。
• SSID:可以是BSS或ESS可读的名字，也叫网络名。1~32个字节。为了安全，可以隐藏起来，AP不广播，station可以自己配置完成。SSID在ESS里面也叫ESSID。

• BSSID：the BSSID is theMAC address of the wireless access point (WAP) 。这是BSS正式的名字，并且总是只和一个BSS关联；在probe消息里为全1。
  • 空口mac，可以多个。

  • 一个AP可以配置多个essid，即多个通道，相当于多个WAP，每个WAP必须配置不同的essid.

SSID是一个ESS的网络标识(如:TP_Link_1201)，BSSID是一个BSS的标识，BSSID实际上就是AP的MAC地址，用来标识AP管理的BSS，在同一个AP内BSSID和SSID一一映射。在一个ESS内SSID是相同的，但对于ESS内的每个AP与之对应的BSSID是不相同的。如果一个AP可以同时支持多个SSID的话，则AP会分配不同的BSSID来对应这些SSID。

• IBSS (independent BSS)：------- AD HOC网络，没有AP。For an IBSS, the BSSID is a locally administered MAC address generated from a 46-bit random number. The individual/group bit of the address is set to 0 (individual). The universal/local bit of the address is set to 1 (local).
   In an IBSS, the SSID is chosen by the client device that starts the network, and broadcasting of the SSID is performed in a pseudo-random order by all devices that are members of the network. Ad-Hoc（点对点）模式：ad-hoc模式就和以前的直连双绞线概念一样，是P2P的连接，所以也就无法与其它网络沟通了。一般无线终端设备像PMP、PSP、DMA等用的就是ad-hoc模式。 在家庭无线局域网的组建，我想大家都知道最简单的莫过于两台安装有无线网卡的计算机实施无线互联，其中一台计算机连接Internet就可以共享带宽。如右图所示，一个基于Ad-Hoc结构的无线局域网便完成了组建。
