Why I like to Read Newspaper

My Opinion of Today’s Education
I think one of the main problems with today’s education is that too much emphasis is placed on test scores. It has become the most important criterion for college enrollment. A student, however creative and intelligent, will not be admitted into a college if his total scores are just one point less than required. It is also one of the crucial factors either in job assignment or in employment competitions.
The competition for high scores among students becomes intense. Students find themselves concentrating more on strategies to achieve high scores than on acquiring knowledge. They will play truant of some subsidiary course, skip over the substance which will not be tested on, even pump teachers for hints on upcoming exams. Teachers are apt to give their students high scores. As their job is judged mainly by the students’ performance in terms of scores, some teachers tend to set easy papers to test their students on or narrow down the scope of the exam. Some teachers even leak “accidentally” the exam questions or lower their criterion of scoring.
As a result, the competition for high scores becomes so intense that it actually defeats academic goals of education.
Education and the Market
As the socialist market economy in China is expanding, education is becoming more closely related to the market. In a broad sense, all the modern society is based on the market economy. As part of the society, education cannot be separated from the market. On the contrary, the former has much to do with the latter. Therefore, it is general believed that educaiton serves the market and the latter, in turn, supports the former.
The reason for education to enter the market is obvious. As a developing country, China is not likely to invest a huge amount of money in education in the near future. Education has to turn to the market to find its own way. It is important to note that teacher’s way of production is to teach and train students. The students’ knowledge is an invisible product. In addition, their services to students and society are valuable. So education has to be run in accordance with the law value to realize the aim that students pay for their education and find jobs for themselves rather than being assigned jobs by the states.
Personally, I think education is an independent industry between students and the talent market. It is the indispensable link between the two. So I can conclude that since science and technology and talented people can enter the market, it is a matter of course for education to enter the market.
Challenges
Everyone has to accept all kinds of challenges in his life. There are not only physical challenges, but also social and intellectual challenges. Adventurers risk their lives in exploring the primitive areas. Athletes devote themselves to playing sports to show their skills.
Many reasons are included in people’s preference to challenges. The first is curiosity. Normally people take great interest in unknown things and world. The second is the personal feeling of achievement. People often pride themselves on their abilities to go through challenges smoothly. The third is for the meaning of life. After challenges, people can know themselves better and deeply enjoy the real life.
Today we still confront many challenges. Doctors face the challenges of conquering disease attacking human beings. Planners must produce more design and transportation. Scientists are to develop new forms of energy. All in all, we live in an age of challenges.
Advantages and Disadvantage of Free Medical Service
Free medical service has been a welfare policy in China. It used to benefit people a lot in cities, when people couldn’t earn much money, this policy helped them feel safe from the high medical expense.
But free medical service also brings some problems. For example, many people take advantage of it and get a lot of medicine a time when they are sick. It is a great waste to the country. Besides, when hospitals can’t earn money, they begin to provide poorer and poorer service.
So it is urgent to undertake reform in free medical service. Patients have to pay some or all the expense. But the reform should keep in pace with the increase of people’s wages.
Video Games
Video games have become very popular in recent years. Wherever you go, you can see youngsters or even adults indulged in the games. When they play the games in clubs, stores, or homes, they concentrate all their attention on them, with their hands busy operating. Obviously, video games give them great wonderful entertainment. They bring great pleasure to youngsters, train them to respond quickly, stimulate their imagination and interest in electronics and computer science. In short, video games play a good part in the development of youngsters intelligence.
Just as a coin has two sides, video games have also some disadvantage. Some young people especially school children, spend too much time playing them, which would do harem to their health and eyes and affect their school achievements. Only if one has enough self-control, can one benefit from video games.
Film Is Giving Way to TV
There are fewer film-goers now than before. The number of TV-watchers has been increasing. In 1975, there were only 5,000 TV-watchers and in 1985, the number increased 20 times. The increase is due to the development of TV industry. With the development of economy, people are richer than before and many families can afford to buy color TV sets. People would prefer to stay at home to watch TV rather than go out to see a film.
Although film is giving way to TV, there are still some people who like watching films not only because good films are not shown on TV but because film has its own advantage.
